Bragdon, immigration agent for the parish
of East Feliciana, may be of interest to
our readers. Our planters will do well to
peruse the same, as it is lull of hints from
which they may profit:
In the interest of immigration, von. on
the fifth of September last, saw fit to honor
me with an appointment as agent to lay
certain uroporitionsot your honorable body
before the Northern aud Western public
and while I wish to acknowledge with
many thanks this mark of your confidence,
I deeply regret that iu the limited time
taken Irom my official and professional
labors, as well as, no doubt, my inefficiency,
I was unable to do justice to so very impor
tant a subject.
Immigration, which has been so wisely
considered by your body, and the introduc
tion and settlement of an intelligent and in
dustrious agricultural population upon yoi r
lands, must eventually establish on its
most substantial basis the complete pros
I teritv of your parish. Agrictilturn is well
mown to be pre-eminent among the three
productive interests of a coun .rv, yet of all
arts it is perhaps that one iii which the
least improvement has been made in the
course of historical ages. S ill. i s progress
has l>eeu considerable, especially within the
last half century, and the laid is still open
for improvement, to which no probable limit
can be assigned.
By reference to the late reports of the
Commissioner id Agriculture, it will he seen
that the Southern States vie with the di*
taut West in extent of unoccupied laui's.
They show an ana not in farms amounting
to nearlv three hundred mi'lion acres,
nearly two-thirds as much more unimproved
in farms,and less Ilian seventy-live millions

Let us raise not only such grasses as we
need for home consumption, but let us also
supply the Northern market with hay, and

bring into our State in return the money
that we have been draining from our own
capital to swell that of other States.
our plan lor inducing immigration is a
most exellent one. and iu my travels during
my visits to the North, it tnet with great
encouragement and many promises of as
sistauce from the press a- veil as from pri
vate gentlemen, who interested themselves
iu the movement, and who will render
much aid iu securing an industrious class
of people us emigrants. The enterprise has
given rise to considerable discussion among
the migratory classes of population :n the
North, aud it may be said in truth that the
prospects are most encouraging for an earlv
influx of labor into East Feliciana. The
proposition is widely circulated throughout
the North, and much enthusiasm is felt iu
the movement by many.
Permit me to urge'at this time that a
vigorous and Judicious plan of advertising
be kept continually before the agricultural
community, through the columns of the
various agricultural papers iu circulation in
the North.
This I believe to be essentially necessary,
and that it will be by far the best invest
ment that can be made by the parish, not
in the increase of capital' and the immedi
ate acquisition of lalior. but in the rapid an
preeiation iu value ol lands.
It remains for the parish, in a great part,
to carry out successfully this praiseworthy
scheme, and I doubt not that with its pres
ent government so well representing the
will of the people. East Feliciana may be
soon alive with industrious farmers and her
fields groaning with abundance of their pro-
ducts.

dodge the car lamps, excited considerable
curiosity among the passengers, and a

Jacob l'hincy, a veteran who served tin
ker Commodore Berry at the battle of Lake

persons on the vessel who came out of the
light uninjured. The other two were a
brother ami uncle. All three of these men
were almost gigantic in stature, the small
est measuring six feet three inches in height.

The Uilratn. fleuslqn and Henderson
Railroad.
The Galveston A'eics of the seventeenth
says:
Our readers will remember that $Ir. F.
P. James, of New York, bought the Gai
vestou. Houston and Henderson railroad at
the United States Marshal's sale, free from
all eucumhrauces, lor $675,000.
The suit was brought in the interest of
the bondholders, who got absolutely noth
iug. for the settlement of preferred debts
al s ubed all the purchase money. On Fri
day a new company was formed, ot which
Mr. Robert Colwell was elected president,
and a number of gentlemen elected direc
tors.
These organized under the title of tbs
Galveston, Houston and Henderson Rail
road Company of 1871, aud bought the
road with all its franchises, the interest of
Cowdrey James iu Houston and at Cow
dreyville, and the bridge. For this prop
erty they issue bonds to the amount of a
million and a half.
The shareholders in the company of 1871
yesterday made an agreement with Mr.
Pierce aud his friends, by which the latter
became owners of the road aud all its ap
purtenances, by purchasing the shares of
the company of 1871, and heiug elected its
officers and directors. Mr. Colwell and his
associates resigning for that purpose.
The result of all this will he that all the
Cowdrey James interest will pass into
the hands of Mr. Pierce and Lis friends for
a consideration, which has not been named.
This terminates the business of Cowdry
James in Texas. They will now pack up
their respective satchels, aud. shaking the
sand from oil their feet as a testimony
against us, retire to pastures new. content
that they have made money by their busi
ness iu Texas.

A few nights ago, says a late West Point
(Virginia) t iti:en, one of our most respecta
ble citizens, living in the outskirts of the
city, saw. late at night, a tire in the field in
rear of his residence, aud desiring to ascer
tain its purpose went, in company with a
triend, to the place. Here he found a fully
matured fifteenth amendment cooking a
black cat in one of his stove pots, which 1m*
had borrowed without giving notice of the
tact, in this wise: Fifteenth had cut oft
one leg of his fuumentionahles. placed the
black cat therein alive, tied both ends of
the improvised sack, anil put in the sack
