Not including Jefferson and Algiers. .♦159,860 117,900 .♦277,769 No Ordinance.— Several days ago a man was arrested on Willow street for burying a deceased infant in the yard of the prem ises The mother had kept the corpse in the house three days, being unable to pay funeral expenses. The man was president of some benevolent association and interred the body on solicitation of the sick mother. The examination took place before Recorder Houghton, when that official failed to find any ordinance or clause prohibiting the of fense, consequently there is no punishment. There is nothing but a natural custom to govern in this or similar cases, but custom does not prescribe or enforce penalties. Perhaps it woul^be well for our City Coun cil to enact a law and fix a penalty in order that offenses may hereafter be punished. The Chain Gang.—C. Webster, alias Billy Ray, Thomas Ward, alias L. H. Smith, the festive young men from burnt out Chicago, wbo linked their misfortunes together in prigging gold chains from vari ous merchants here, were remanded to prison in default of bonds. Three affidavits are pending against them, and iris thought three more will come. Accused traveled one link beyond their measured depth, and the chances are fair that they will do the State some service in Baton Rouge. Their career of crime was short. Domestic Infelicity. Last evening Mrs. Ann B-visited the harbor police station, in great grief, seeking for her hus band and two children, who had cruelly de serted her. Detective McIntyre, following her hint, found the recreant on a Red river steamboat, ready to leave for Texas. There was a conference until both felt tolerably comfortable. The result was that Fred, the husband, did not leave for Texas; she persuaded him to return to a cold hearth, stone, that a fire may once more be lighted and a family sustained. There is a vivid history attached, but it does not belong to the public. __ With Intent to Kill.— It would appear that human life is held in small estimation, provided we accept the davies of the fol lowing persons as trne: Edward Barlow, not the inventor of a very poor knife, swears that Armstead Hill actually tried to kill him, on Tchoupi* toulas street. James Conner avers that Patrick Conned threatened to use a glittering knife on him. James Kitney, is positive that unless a dignified law restrains William Crowley, he (Crowley), will ot a verity slay him with a dangerous weapon, to-wit, a cotton hook. Recorder Houghton fixed on a future day for examiuing these cases. Market Commissary G. D. Geddes, caused the arrest of D. Sabath, J. P. Burrell, J. Lamerique and P. Verges, Poydras market, for failing to cease vending meats, etc., after twelve o'clock M.. as is the law and custom. Accused will he examined on the sixteenth. Caught.— Fellows who confiscate prop erty indiscriminately will finally run against a judicial snag, as has Bowleg Donovan. Last evening at dusk he slyly visited the clothing store corner of St. Charles and lommon streets, where he grabbed sixteen fiats, retiring in good order. Bat he did l c pt retire for enough. Weeks recently found grocery Mil containing over six dollars on a banquette in the Third District. Reading the bill, he discovered that it was tor a gro* eery near ijlm, when he instantly delivered it with the money to the proprietor, who presented him with a neat package of ar ticles that please a lad's fancy. Our little hero, feeling like a man, blithely started home, scarcely conscious that he was hero, and on the way noticed two boys full of trouble, seeking every inch of ground, as if they had loot something. He inquired the cause of their tribulation and was tear fully told that they had lost some money folded in a bit ot paper. He dried their tears in a trice by telling them that he had found the money end deposited it in the right place. Then there three happy lads and a pleased father, the parent rejoicing that the good lessons he had taught his son had not been in vain._ _ Depabted. Two plantation hands, Thomas Smith and Henderson Johnson, to be desperate fellewe, judging by the way they handle knives. They met in deadly conflict five miles above Carrollton and slashed each other cavalierly with bowias. Smith was badly cut in three places, but Johnson secured the wont wound, one that may end fatally. Both were arrested, and both make charges that the other attempted to kill him, all of which 'is doubtless true. A "soon" judge would condemn the belligerents to death, but Car rollton judges are lenient, and as that city is now in a fighting humor, perhaps the au thorities will fix up a duel as soon as the slashers are recovered. i" Criminal Court— Judge Abell.—Con Hampson, who had pleaded guilty to steal* ing some clothing, on the sixteenth of Oc tober, from Celeste Leary, was sentenced to one year in the Penitentiary. Pierre Davis; charged with stealing, on tho sixteenth of September, from Joseph Kotzour, two guns valued at $30, was con victed. Mrs. Burke, charged by Mary Rider with assault and battery on the thirteenth of September, was acquitted. Attachments were issued for absent jurors, to be returnable Wednesday, the eighth in stant, at 10 A. M. Bob Craig and Thomas Denny, charged with assault and battery, on the seven teenth "of "September, on Franklin Wood son, were discharged oa a nolle prosequi. Tbo Grand Jury reported the following true bills: Against Julius 8ocha, for keeping a dis orderly ale and tippling house. Mr. Socha surrendered himself, and was released on $500 bonds to appear tor trial. Against Thomas Carry, for assaulting with a dangerous weapon, on the third in stant, O. P. Lyons—a true bill. Bonds $500. __ Proper Names. —One of the bogus coun terfeiting firms In New York continues to send its circulars to persons in this city, and perhaps find a few dishonest correspon dents. Two bells, Tom Beil and William Camp bell, were canght ringing confidence changes in the seventh precinct. Sinoulab PaocEEDiXG.—At dark last evening Annie Lewis called at the police stationhoose in Algiers and inquired for Officer Camp. Being informed that he was at liis home, she went there and called on him to support an infant she carried in her arms. Camp refused her request and called an officer to arrest her for abandoning her child. She qnd the infant were locked op. Apparently the mother claims that Officer Camp is the father of her child. The Board of Police Commissioners will probably look into the case. Coroner Taylor held an inquest on the body of Augustus Stewart, found drowned on the right bank opposite Carroll ton. De. ceased was thirty-two years old, a native •f Louisiana.__ The grocery and coffeehouse owned and occupied by Mr. Bellanger, in Milneburg, waa nearly destroyed by fire last evening. A defective stove pipe was the cause of the fire. __ A Blockade. —One of the main arteries of the commerce of New Orleans was par tially closed yesterday. The A1 screw steamer Major White sunk in Carondelet canal yesterday morning, near Claiborne street bridge. Tl>e crew succeeded in making their escape without the assistance of lifeboats._ _ _ A Memphis dispatch of the second instant s^ys: A forger, calling himself J. H. Comstock, was recently here, and bought and paid for a three thousand dollar draft on the Lou isiana National Bank of New Orleans, and obtained a letter of identification, hut has not put in an appearance there. He will prob ably turn up in some other city. The letter was obtained on a forged letter from Nash ville. _*_ The Vidalia Herald says of the yellow fever there: Since our last issue five or six new eases have occurred, but all seem to be doing well,: and we are of the opinion that the fever has about run its course. For the but four days not a new case has occurred, and should the present cold weather continue, we hope that it will cease entirely. The Lafourche Timet reports the fol lowing: A sod difficulty occurred some days since at Tigerville, parish of Terrebonne, between Mr. Willi a m Vorhiees and a merchant of that place, in which the latter was shot and instant!/ killed.
