Tbe old Hartford Office, notwithstanding its heavy
looses at Chicago, comes out with its capital unim
pared, and assets amounting to over oue million
live hundred thou*and dollar*.
The assets ot the Hartford Company on the 1st of
October were $9,785,877. It is estimated that
their Josses by tlie Chicago lire will not exceed $1,"
900,000. which leaves the Company in a condition
tor meeting all tuture obligations promptly and hon

A Virginia Gentleman of the Old School.
We find the following description of Presi
dent Jefferson’s domestic life and habits, after
his retirement from public life, written by his
grandson, Col. Jefferson Randolph:
His manners were of that polished school
ot the Colonial government, so remarkable in
its day under no circumstances violating any
of those minor conventional observances
which constitute the well-bred gentleman,
courteous and considerate to all persons. On
riding out with him when a lad, we met a ne
gro who bowed to us; he returned the bow;
I did not. Turning to me, he asked,
“Do you permit a negro to be more of a
gentleman than yourself?”
Mr. Jetferson’s hair, when young, was of a
reddish cast, samly as he advanced in years;
his eye, hazel. Dying in his 84tli year, he
had not lost a tooth, nor had one defective;
his skin thin, peeling from his face on expo
sure to the sun, and giving it a tettered ap
pearance; the superficial veins so werk, as
upon the slightest blow to cause extensive
suffusions of blood—in early life, upon stand
ing to write for any length of time, bursting
beneath the skin; it, however, gave him no
inconvenience. HLs countenance was mild

While President, returning on horseback
trom Charlottesville with company whom he
had invited to dinner, and who were, all but
one or two, riding ahead of him, on reaching
a stream over which there was no bridge, a
man asked him to take him up behind him
ana carry him over. I lit; gentleman in the
rear coming up just as Mr. Jefferson had put
him down ami ridden on, asked the man how
it happened that he had permitted the others
to pass without asking them. He replied,
“From their looks I did not like to ask
them; the old gentleman looked as if he
would do it, and I asked him.*’ He was very
much surprised to hear that he had ridden,
behind the President of the United States.
Mr. Jefferson’s stature was commanding—
six ieet two-and-a half inches in height, well
formed, indicating strength, activity, and ro
bust health; his carriage erect; step linn and
elastic, which he preserved to his death; his
temper, naturally strong, under perfect con
trol; his courage cool and impassive. No one
ever knew him exhibit trepidation. His mor
al courage of the highest order—his will firm
and inflexible—it was remarked of him that
he never abandoned a plan, a principle, or a
friend.
A bold and fearless rider, you saw at a
glance, from his easy anil confident seat, that
he was master of his horse, which was usual
ly the fim^ blood-horse of Virginia. The only
impatience of temper he ever exhibited was
with his horse, which he subdued to his will
by a fearful application of the whip on the
slightest manifestation of restiveness. He re
tained to the last his fondness for riding on
horseback; he rode within three weeks of his
death, when, from disease, debility, and age,
he mounted with difficulty. He rode with
confidence, and never permitted a servant to
accompany him; he was fond of solitary rides
and musing, and said that the presence of a
servant annoyed him.
His habits were regular and systematic.
He was a miser of his time, rose always at
dawn, wrote and read until breakfast,, break
fasted early, and dined from three to four; re
tired at nine, and to bed from ten to eleven.
He said, in his last illness, that the sun had
not caught him in bed for filly years.
He always made his own fire. He drank
water but once a day, a single glass, when he
returned from his ride. He ate heartily, and.
much vegetable food, preferring French cook
ery, because it made the meats more tender.
He never drank ardent spirits or strong wines.
Such was his aversion to ardent spirits that
when, in his last illness, his physician desired
him to use brandy as an astringent, he could
not induce him to take it strong enough.
Experiences of a Suicide.
A man in Harrisburg recently attempted to
commit suicide by taking a grain of strych-■
nine. The skill of his physician having saved
his life he narrates his experience for the ben
efit of science. He says:

feel slight cramps in the calves of my legs.
The cramps increased in intensity and extend
ed to the feet and thighs, causing the most in
tense pain. I at l .'mpted to rise from the
chair, but fell to the door with convulsions in
the lower extremities. Unsuccessful at
tempts were made to Lathe my feet in hot
water, each effort to raise me bringing on a
violent paroxysm, in the last one of which I
thought my jaws had become unhinged. I
was now perfectly paralyzed from the hips
down and suffering the most excruciating
pains, which began to extend upwards; the
muscles of the shoulders and neck soon being
considerably convulsed, the forearms still be
ing free from pain.
I now prepared for the final struggle, which
I knew must be near at hand, as I had be
come rigid from the neck down, save the fore
arms. The convulsions of the muscles were
becoming fearful, and the torture awful to en
dure. My hands Were drawn in to my sides,
with the fingers drawn apart, and .sn^htty
bowed, and the jaws became rigid. I felt my
self raised as if by some mighty power, and
fixed immovably, with only my feet and head
touching anything. I became unconscious of
everything except my own agony, which was
now beyond all description. I could feel my
heart fluttering, and my brain beating and
throbbing with an irregular motion, as though
at every beat it would burst from its confine
ment. Every joint was locked, and every
drop of blood seemed stagnated. I remem
ber thinking it could not be long thus, when
I must have lost consciousness.
I remember nothing more until I felt a sen
sation of relief, as though the garments of
death, which had been drawn over me, were
now being drawn back. Those terrible cramps
seemed to be descending towards my lower
limbs. A feeling of relief stole over me, and
I began to be again conscious.
.From that time I resumed consciousness,
when I was entirely free from cramp, with
the exception of a little in the feet. I had
but one attack of cramps afterwards, which
was immediately relieved by a dose adminis
tered by my wife—the doctor having left for a
short time—and when he returned I felt that
the poison was completely neutralized.”
He is not likely to try strychnine again.
A Commissioner of Inscriptions.—As I
was walking onco with an intelligent friend
in a cemetery, he said to me: “We have in
eevery town a commissioner of highways,
whose duty it is to inspect all roads, and not
to allow any street to become a public way
unless it is safe and in every way satisfactory.
So we ought, I think, to have a commissioner
of inscriptions, who should not allow any
epitaph to be placed in a graveyard unless it
is free from absurdities and is acceptable to a
correct taste.” We had just been looking at
a monument which bore the name of a high
ly respectable clergyman, and below a square
divided off thus: on the right, “His children,”
with a list of their names; on the left, “His
companions,” with a list of the “companions.”
I can scarcely say why (we can rarely tell why

tal to repress a smile. It was as though Brig
ham Young should introduce to you a row of
dames, saying, with a comprehensive wave of
the hand and with an all-embracing smile,
“My wives.” Ami, by the way, dear editor,
will you tell me (for the editor, you know,
is omniscient) why the deceased wife of a
minister is always culled his companion No
one else ever calls his wife so; nor does the
minister, I think, until she is dead. But
then lie says: "1 have buried my compan
ion.” To be sure, it is not quite as bad as the
“my lady” of half bred nouveaux richesses,
swollen with accidental wealth or public plun
der. I haven’t a doubt that the “boss” always
speaks of “my lady.” This is both absurd and
pretentious. “Companion” is only absurd. I
heartily second the motion of my friend for a
commissioner of inscriptions.—President II.

Bear-hunting is not always the pleasantest
kind of amusement. So thinks Mr. Hamil
ton of Missouri. This gentleman shouldered
his rifle one morning and went into the tim
ber abont a mile off, to shoot squirrels. At
night he had not returned, nor did he make
his appearance during the following night.
As aquirrets are not apt to devour a man,
several neighbors the next morning went in
search ol him. About 3 o’clock in the after
noon they found him up a tree, thirty feet
from the ground, and unable to extricate
himself. He said that about 3 o’clock the
previous day he came across a large black bear
and shot at him but missed him, when the
bear made for him with all his might. He
ran, and finding the bear gaining on him he
threw away his rifle and climbed up a syca

ott, and was hollow, in which hole he thrust
one of lus legs to keep himself from falling,
but he soon found that his leg was fast when
he tried to extricate himself, and he could
not draw it out. The bear in the meantime

foot and ankle. Mr. Hamilton took his
pocket-knife out and cut at his eyes but
with one sweep of his paw the bear struck
the knife from his hand, with a part of two of

gave up to die, expecting to be eaten up alive
by the beast. But soon a happy thought

returned, when a little more salt drove him’
away the second time, when, to Mr Hamil
ton’s inexpressible delight, he now saw him
trotting off into the forest. And now Mr.
Hamilton advises all hunters in Osage county
to carry a pocketful of salt with them, or else
to be sure that they are “dead shots” before
they practice target-shooting on a black bear.
A Hard Time.—Schooner Willie Seavey,
Capt. Elias Tarlton, with a crew of ten men,
started from near Boon Island at about four
o’clock on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 29th,
expecting to make port at Newcastle early
the same evening. The intense cold caused
ice to form so rapidly about the hull of the
schooner that her sailing was sensibly dulled,
and the rudder could scarcely be worked and
lost much ot its power from the accumulation
of ice around the stern post. As the vessel
w as nearly unmanageable and the crew suf
fering terribly, Captain Tarlton endeavored
to make a harbor at the Shoals, failing in
whieh a new departure was taken for the
original destination. Newcastle, and the
schooner beat across with a fair tide in about
ten hours. The crew were chilled almost to
death when they reached the wharf, and were
unable to walk without assistance; but their
friends were anxiously watching for their re
turn, and soon conveyed them to places of
shelter and safety. Without help, some if

She Wouldn’t Mabry a Mechanic.—A
young man commenced visiting a young wo
man, and appeared to be well pleased. One
evening lie called when it was quite late
which led the young lady to inquire where he
had been.
“I had to work to-night.”
“Wliat, do you work for a living?” she in
quired in astonishment.
“Certainly,” replied the young man. “I
am a mechanic.”
“I dislike the name of a mechanicand
she turned up her prettv nose.
i nat was the last time the young man visit
ed that young lady. He is now a wealthy
man and has one of the best women in the
country for liis wile.
The lady who disliked the name of a me
chanic is now the wife of a miserable fool, a
regular vagrant about grog shops, and the
miserable girl is obliged to take in washing in
