The Italian Budget shows a deficit of one
hundred and sixty millions of livre
William H. Foster died suddenly in Provi
dence, yesterday, of heart disease.
A Scottish vessel the Fanquai, has been
wrecked off Cape Breton. All hands were
lost.
By a railway accident near Shefield last
evening one man was killed and many were
injured.
F. D. Hadley an employe of the Union
House in Springfield Mass., fell dead on
Main street Tuesday night.
The Eagle Hotel, at Northampton, Mass.,
was partially destroyed by fire yesterday.
Loss, SIO,OOO fully insured.
James Cronan aged 28, fell 3 stories
through an elevator in the Lowell Carpet
Co.’s shop Tuesday killing him instantly.
Two mail-carriers of the Island of Orleans,
while on their way to Quebec, were drowned
by falling through the ice, on Saturday last.
In Cincinnati last week sixty-eight deaths
from small-pox were reported, and the city
now is said to contain 500 cases of the mali
gnant type.
A bridge on the Cincinatti and Indianapo
lis Junction Railroad, 14 miles south of
Connersville, Ind., was burned on Sunday.
Loss, $12,000.
Botts, the murderer of Pet Halsted, has
been respited by Governor Randolph, in
order that he may have additional time to
prepare for death.
John Simmons, a saloon-keeper at Balti
more, committed suicide yesterday afternoon
by shooting with a musket while in a state
of temporary insanity.
The jury in the Blackburn case, at Chil
licothe, Ohio, rendered a verdict, yesterday,
of murder in the second degree. A motion
for a new trial will be argued on the 22d of
January next.
A curious story comes from Saline County,
Kan., which it is to be hoped can be taken
with a grain of salt. Seventeen emigrants
are reported to have been frozen to death on
the prairies.
Two brothers named McHall, one an en
gineer and the other a brakeman, were run
over on the Delaware, Lackawanna and
Western Railroad, near Scranton, last even
ing, and instantly killed.
Governor Hoffman has respited Kelly and
Gomehle, sentenced to be hanged on the 15th
of December, to January 12 next. It is
thought the sentence of both will be com
muted to imprisonment for life.
They are overhauling the Brooklyn City
accounts. It is stated that there are discrep
ancies in the Excise Commissioners’ reports
which call for explanation. Some important
questions have been put to the City Auditor
and Assessor.
Mr. Trumbull's motion for an investigation
committee has naturally caused the profound
est anxiety to the friends of the President.
Mr. Trumbull says they having nothing to
fear “if” the government has been properly
admininistered.
Timothy Quinn was fatally stabbed by
Mike McGee, during a fight m a saloon in
Virginia City, on Monday night. Quinn
shot at McGee, the. bullet lodging in his
watch, knocking him down, but only slight
ly injuring him.
A destructive fire occurred at Honesdale,
Wayne County, Penn., yesterday, destroy
ing about $50,000 worth of property. The
hardware store of Hartley Rogers, Home’s
flour store, Brady’s drug store, and Scott’s
shoe store were destroyed; all covered by in-
A locomotive attached to a water train on
the Illinois Central Railroad exploded last
night, near Centralia. Houcks, engineer;
Brewington, fireman; and Keen, brakeman,
were killed. The engine was demolished.
One of the bodies was blown two hundred
feet.
Geo. Anderson and John D. Patterson,
charged with the murder of Edward Crem
mings, last week, at Enon, Ohio, were ar
rested at Osborn, on Monday. While passing
through Enon, the citizens of that place at
tempted to lynch the prisoners, but were
prevented by the officers.
The Senate has concurred with the House
in adjourning for the holidays, from Dec
ember 21 to January 8, 1872. There were
a number of bills introduced and referrer!,
and in executive session there were several
nominations confirmed, chief of which were
that of Commissioner Douglass, Collector
Charles A. Arthur, and Minister Bancroft.

for causing the death of Mary Russell by
malpractice, was yestereay found guilty and
sentenced to seven years in Bing Sing. The
Recorder called attention to the curious coin
cidence that the unfortunate girls Bowlsby
and Russell both came to their fate upon the
same day, August 23.
Beth Johnson, late a Treasury clerk, who
was committed to jail a few days since charg
ed with the embezzlement of public money
from the Treasury Department, was taken
before the Washington Police Court yester
day morning for the purpose of giving bonds
for the action of the Grand Jury, but the
parties offering not being satisfactory to the
court, he was committed to jail.
The Wharton case is still on in Baltimore.
Professor Aiken's cross-examihation was
continued. He explained a “serious error”
in one of his statements. An apothecaty
testified to having sold tartar emetic to Mrs.
Wharton. Mr. Hutton testified that that
lady called his attention to a bottle of lauda
num, said by her to have been found near
General Ketchum’s bed.
In the House Mr. Herndon (Democrat
from Texas) was sworn m. Several bills
were reported, including one appointing the
first Monday of November, 1872, as the day
for choosing electors for President and Vice-
President. Air. Bank’s bill for an appropria- j
tion for the expense of the Geneva tribual
was referred. The discussion of the Ap-
portionment bill was continued. j
There were several serious failures in New 1
York yesterday. First the Ocean Bank be- f
ing unable satisfy its obligations to the Clear- s
ing house Association, was suspended and
then expelled from the association. The
friends of the bank say it will pay every
cent on the dollar. There were also several
failures in the cotton trade caused by the
recent rise two cents in the pound which
was based on the interruption in the supply
from the South. The cotton 'markets South
and North have been greatly upset. There j
was also a run on the Union Square Bank
Which had transactions with the Ocean Bank.

were burned yesterday morning. The total
loss is about $200,000. Two hundred per
sons are thrown out of employment by this
catastrophe.
The Czarowltz Alexander of Russia had a
personal encounter with the German Minis
ter yesterday. The combatants were sepa
rated before doing serious damage. The af
fair is unfortunate.
It is reported that Minister Schenck, hav
ing accomplished his purpose with reference
to the treaty of Wushington, and regarding
his personal interest here as imperative, has
requested the President to name a successor
and call him home from England.
Edwin Foster, an inmate of the Insane
Retreat at Hartford, wandered to the rail
road track Tuesday evening, and was run
over by an express train. The body was
fearfully mangled. Foster belonged in Grand
Rapids, Mich.
The third trial of Tom McGehan, the con
nection with whose prosecution proved so
fatal to Vallandigham, was begun at Dayton,
0., Monday. The prisoner did not seem
much the worse for his long confinement,
and appeared cool and unconcerned.
From Havana comes the oft-repeated as
sertion that the Cuban insurgents are on
their last legs. One item of the dispatch is
probably true: “Not a house is left stand
ing in the whole country between Las Tunas
and Aloron, aud the desolation that prevails
is terrible.”
Senator Trumbull’s resolution w r as delib
erated upon by the administration Senators
in caucus yesterday, the result being an
agreement that a Committee on Retrench
ment be appointed the same as other com
mittees. When the Senate met, Air. An
thony offered the resolution agreed upon as
a substitute for Air. Trumbull’s, and after a
most interesting debate the Senate adjourned
without reaching a vote-
In the House of Representatives yester
day the whole subject of working men and
their rights was placed on a new basis. Mr.
Hoar, from the Committee on Education
and Labor, reported a bill to appoint certain
officers for the investigation of the question
of wages and the hours of labor, the divis
ion of the joint profits of labor and capital
between the laborer and the capitalist, and
the social, educational and sanitary condition
of the working classes of the United States.
Air. Hoar contended that something must be
done to quell the rising discontent of the la
boring classes, or, like European countries,
we shall soon be on the brink of a revolu
tion. The question was ably discussed, and
promises to become a prominent one in the
public estimation.

Henry Hamler fell from a scoffaid in Mont
Vernon yesterday, and was fatally inju ed.
John Ware, who murdered his father in
1870, in Camden, N. Y., was hung to-day.
Jacob Nederhueer fell from a building in
New York, yesterday, and was instantly
killed.
A fire in Appleton, Wis., on Wednesday,
destroyed three stores, five saloons, and other
small buildings. The loss is $15,000.
A man named Gehan and his servant girl
have been arrested at Spaniard’s Bay, N. F.,
charged with the murder of Airs. Gehan and
her brother.
Mrs. Garrison’s residence in Buffalo was
entered by burglars last evening, who stole
$8,500 in five-twenty bonds of 1868. No
arrests were made.
Dr. O. H. Hmb, formerly business manag
er of Crosby’s Opera House, in Chicago, who
attempted to committ suicide, a few weeks
ago, by shooting, died on Wednesday.
A fire in Lynn, Mass., yesterday, burned
the stable of Lamper& Bro., flour and grain
dealers, with 16 horses. Several buildings
adjoining were damaged. Loss, $12,000
insurance, $5,000.
Wyoming women can vote as often as
their male persecutors will let them, for
another year at least, as the Governor's vote
was sustained in the Council though over
ridden in the house.
Governor English will not accept the Deo
ocratie nomination this spring. At least,
the Register, sufficient authority in the mat
ter, says be will not, and urges an early con
vention for the forming of a new ticket.
Mr. Akerman having resigned his office as
Attorney-General the President yesterday
nominated ex-Senator Williams, of Oregon,
to the vacant office The Senate in execu
tive session at once confirmed the nomina
tion.
A shooting affray occurred at Richmond,

resulted in Snellings being probably fatally

H. C. Hodges’ three story brick building,
in Alansfleld, Ohio, was burned yesterday.
In the building was a grocery- store, a print
ing office, and a law office. Loss, $25,000;
insurance, $12,000. John Klein, Jr., and
Miss Alatthis were killed by the walls falling
upon an adjoining wooden building, which
was completely demolished.
The Hunter Point bible war is again re
newed. Ihe principal of the school denies
that he was a party to the compromise
which permits any of the scholars to be
absent from the chapel during the reading
of the scriptures, and demands that all shall
be present. If any dissatisfaction arises
the injured can appeal to the State authori
ties.
A tramp entered a house in Burnside, Ct.,
yesterday, asking for something to eat and
for work. The occupant of the house, an
old lady 70 years old, while giving him some
drink, was seized by the ruffian, overpowered
and outraged. Two hundred dollars reward
is offered for his arrest. He has very dark
hair and complexion, black eyes, black
slouched hat, long frock coat, rough and
seedy, 30 to 35 years old.
A fire in Weedsport, Cayuga Co., N. Y.,
yesterday, destroyed the Atwood House,
Porter’s dry goods store, Chaddock’s saloon,
a foundry, Bunfill's drug stote, Watson's
cabinet shop, Eldridge’s grocery, a carnage
shop, two harness shops, four shoe shops,
Masonic Hal), Good Templars Hall, a hoop
skirt factory and three or four other build
ins. The loss falls principally on the Hon.
C. H Weed.
Dr. Aikin, the “great” expert whose tes
timony was relied upon to show that General
Ketchum was poisoned, was badly hurt in
his cross-examination at Annapolis the other
day. It seems this toxicologist has a poor
memory and took a few notes, and did not
preserve the antimony which he found.
Snowden, who nursed General Ketchum dur
ing his fatal illness, testified yesterday as to
the jasmine preparation administered to the
patient.
In the Senate yesterday a memorial was
presented complaining that Venezuela had
seized certain s eamships belonging to citi
zens of the United States. A petition was
aslo presented against women’s suffrage. A
bill to equalize the pay of the eight hour
men was referred to the Finance Committee.
There was a lengthy debate on Trumbull’s
amendment to Morton’s resolution for a re
trenchment committee. The caucus aim
was defeated, though Senator Trumbull’s
amendment was defeated by a vote 24 to 35
The Senate then, after an executive session,
adjourned till Monday. In the house yes
terday a resolution was introduced calling
upon the Secretary of the Treasury to furn
ish that body witn a statement showing the
expenses of the collection of customs in the
United States, including the salaries and
fees of the officials engaged therein, with
the separate expenses of the ports of New
York, Boston, Philadelphia, New Orleans,
Baltimore and San Francisco for the fiscal
year ending June 30, 1871. The Appor
tionment bill was also taken up and passed.
It provides for Representatives from each
State as follows: Maine, 5; New Hampshire,
2; Vermont, 2; Massachusetts, 11; Rhode
Island, 2; Connecticut, 4; New York, 32;
New Jersey, 7; Pennsylvania, 26; Dele
ware 1; Maryland, 6; Virginia, 9; North
Carolina, 8; South Carolina, 6; Georgia, 9;
Alabama, 7; Mississippi, 6; Louisiana, 5;

and on investigation the body was found in
the dissecting room of the medical college.
