material to be used in the construction of the
vessels. We think it might be well, in view
of the interest manifested by the merchants

in the proposed iron barge lines. It would
render the transmission of all kinds of
merchandise to this, city safer, and reduce
the rates of freights from all points. An
item of consideration to the merchants of

The' origin and commencement of the
Chicot county affair was in the fact that a
dispute arose between eitisens, in which one
of them wos stabbed. A riot, in which the
murderers were mobbed, ensued. Riots,
mobk and. lynch law, hara been always
especially avoided by the republican party.
Wa do not purpose to make any comment
on the present state of affairs nntil full par
ticulars are obtained from the scene of dis
aster, and from reliable and official aourcea.
We understand that matters have assumed
a peaceable form, and the condition of Chicot
county is now quiet. Ail good citisena de
precate a mob, or mob law. It is ruinous to

that all necessary action has been taken by
the state authorities, not only to quell the
.present unfortunate riot, but to prevent a

There are two parties in the state to-day.
The first is the republican, and the second
is the democratic. The republican party

republican platform. The democratic party
is composed of thoee who hero boon Identi

have passed from the stage, but they exist

The democratic party ie now engaged in

posseesion of the city government by the
defetion of Brooks. They failed; but they
are now playing do-nothing paaaiviam in
order to .deceive the republican voteri
of the etate, and obtain peiaeeaaion of
the atate government at the next gen
eral election. The democracy are play
ing aleepy and inactive, while Joseph
Brooke runs the democratic party, and
the democratic leaders are working un
der the cover of a republican domino.
Whether the democracy will succeed in ob
taining possession of the state remains to be
seen. But the democratic party appears
very confident that they will be able to Se
cure a victory at the next election.
The republican party are in full unison
with.the state administration of Governor
Hadley and the national administration of
President Grant, while the democratic party
inconstantly engaged in manufacturing false
hoods against them. The action of Brooks
in siding with the democracy, leads many
t> suppose thero are three parties, |but
there are only two in Arkansas to-day.

We confess that wo do not see any remedy
pointed out to meet the existing state of af
fairs in the southern states, that will so
soon filtrate the masses and send into ob
lirion the murderous desire for blood, as the
common school system. GIto these benighted
districts more schools. Dace the history
of past nations before the coming generation,
and let them lenn that honesty ia the best
policy, and that mobs, riots and lyneh law
are the concomitants of ignorance and pre
judice. Let the people unite in the educa
tion of all classes, and let every citisen
frown down the attempts urged to continue
sectional hatred, now being made by the
remnants of an intriguing party. We need
capital, immigration and manufactories from
the older states, and to hare them, we must
push forward our educational system until
each village and hamlet has a public school.
The state needs education, and whoever
is engaged in fomenting the unhappy pro
scriptive spirit, should be shown that the
proscriptive and murderous spirit will no
longer prevail among the intelligent masses.
We need the education of the day to per
vade all classes, and education, thought and
knowledge will certainly abolish the pres
ent feeling of insecurity and jealousy now
so prevalent in the south. What is urgently
needed is more general education among the
masses of the people.
