Salt Lakk, October 0.— Brigham Young, ac
companied by a number of elder®, appeared at
court this afternoon, and was held to bail In the
sum of &V000 t«> answer. He passed through
the crowd, from hi- carriage, up stairs alone

dignified, but he seemed evidently very feeble.
The officers of the court -howed him all
kindness, providing him wilh a large easy

raent, which was overruled. The next move
ment was to quash the Indictment on the
ground that the indictment enumerates sixteen
separate charges in alleging that be lasciviously
cohabited with sixteen different women. Du
ring the argument on this question Brigham
returned to his homestead, for the defense will
continue speaking to this motion to-morrow

The tin discoveries near Ogden are attract
ing much attention. The Star of the West
mine is bonded to-day for a heavy sum, wiib
a cost of forfeit of *o0.000. The ore i* in im
mense quantity. beyond estimate, and produces
from thirty-seven to seventy-one per cent, of
pure tin. Dr. Huff goes cast to morrow for ma
cblnery, and to organise s company.

Chicago, October 10.—The tire continued to
burn last night on the north side, but was thin
morning under control. It is literally true to
8 iy that there is nothing remaining of that side
from the river north to Lincoln park on the
north, and irom the north branch of the river
on the west to the lake on the east. This por
tion of the city, except along the main river
where there were business blocks, was occu
pied bv dwellings, and two-thirds or the pop
ulation are German and Scandinavian, These
are now homeless, and some are in the frame
buildings on the northwest section, and others j
are on tlie prairies without shelter.
Throughout yesterday a renewal of the tires
on the west side was looked for, and a change
of live degrees in the wind at any time
would have led to that result, and there would
literally have been no refuge for any. Every
one had clothing packed ready to start for the
prairies at u moment's notice, but Odd avoided
this last possible addition to our disasters. At
sundown the wind lulled. At three o’clock
this morning rain was so fervently prayed for
that it did not seem long before it came; but
the roof-, ol the houses and the ground have
been so wet that it is now impossible to have
tires to cook food for the multitude.
A meeting of citizen* wa» held in the Con
gregational church, on West Washington
street, which was continued throughout tho
night. Measures were concocted to protect
what property there is left and provide for the
homeless. Fifteen hundred citizens were
sworn in last night as extra police, and General
Sh.ndan is authorized to employ all available
troops for guards, and issue 100,000 ratious.
Five hundred soldiers are on duty. This pre
caution was necessary, for, as remarkable as it
may seem, there were fiends who still sought
to extend the disaster. Two men were caught

remaining part of the city, largely occupied
by wealthy citizens. It i> so far known that
two men caught in the act of filing buildings
have been shot, and two others led off with
ropes around their neck-*. As the wind is

NEW YOKK.
Nkw Yokk, October 10.—The excitement in
the city in relation to the Chicago calamity is
in no wi>e abated this morning. All the peo
ple who were going to work early were anxious
readers of the morning papers which contain
maps of the doomed city. Crowds of business
men were at the hotels until a late hour last
night, to obtain the latent details, many with
iiitrephlation, fearing they also suffered with
their correspondents in the ruined city. It is
thought that business to day will bo en
tirely suspended. Many insurance companies
will doubtless be compelled to suspend for a
short time in order to ascertain their liabilities.
Everyone in the community feels a deep sorrow
for the sufferers, and the response to the
mayor’s proclamation for help will be spon
taneous, and of liberality wo; thy of this city.
Perhaps no event before occurring in this
country ha*- created such a profound sensation
There was no class of citizens among whom
it did not become the all absorbing topic,
and high and low, rich and poor, are all
wrought up to a high state of excitement con
sequent upon the dispatch* b constantly com
ing from the ill fated city. The effect upon
Wall street was tremendous. The excitement
could scarcely have been less intense than that
exhibited in the (loomed city itself. Remarks
were made publicly that tbc eveut was the
signal for the bursting of one of the most awful
bubbles the world bad known, and that the
panic was perhaps Imminent. Jay Cooke Sb
Co. thought It the most terrible calamity that
had eyer happened in this country, with the
exception of the war. The heaviest houses are
doing everything to prevent any panic, and all
the papers editorially ask that succor b*» at
once furnished the city.
In the stock board to day a motion was car
ried unanimously to donate $20,000 to the suf
ferers by the Chicago fire. The governing
committee to whom it was referred are author
ized to increase the amount to so much as the
treasury will allow', under fft) 00Q. Many
failures arc reported in Wall street, although
I the excited state of the mart-et has somewhat
j subsided. The panic which seemed to be
I threatened ha* reached its high flood, and
many dealers Indulge in the hope that the
j worst results have been reached. The news
that the Chicagotire bad been cheeked created
a feeling of cheerfulness, and the excitement Is
j apparently quieting down. At a meeting of
the Germania. Hooover, Niagara and Republic
insurance companies, composing the Under
writers’ age cy of New York, to-day.
prrparatlons were made to pay, immedi
ately upon adjustment, all losses incurred in
Chicago, after doing which the capital ot all
the companies will remain unimpaired. The
j police of the twenty sixth precinct raised this
I morning three hundred dollars and purchased
one Hundred and liftv bands pilot hr* ad,
which was forwarded on the Kiie railroad to
Chicago before ten o'clock this morning. The

of Music, Saturday next, tor the benefit of the
sufferers. The special meeting of 'he chamber
of commerce, called to act in reference to the

The firm of Jay Cooke A. Cd. and the Illinois
railroad company give $10,000 each. There was
a large number of one thousand dollars sub- i
scription*. A committee of one hundred was
appointed to collect subscriptions and to take
measures for forwarding effective aid. A sob-
scription of $5,000 has been given by the j
Journal of Commerce. In many of the princi
pal towns throughout the state action is being
tak«n to assist the suffems. The Brooklyn
authorities promise $100 000 irom that city.
The Spectator, an insurance journal, to-day
soys that none of the leading corporations arc
insolvent, a number of less prominence have
sunk their entire capital, but the failure of j
every one of these will neither cause a panic j
nor seriously interrupt the general progress of!
insurance. The great majority of the com pa*
nies will pay their losses promptly, and some
have already begun to put their assets tn order
to liquidate their obligations. The Spectator
estimates that the actual losses of the eonipa- j
nies will uot much exceed $35,000,000. The
companies transacting business in Chicago
hold $73,000,000 assets, including $7,000,000
held by Chicago companies. Humor to day
spoke of eight companies that had suspended,
but we await an official announcement. The
International insurance company lately adopted
the policy of contracting business in Chicago,
and although its losses are large their payment
will not materially affect Its capital.
It has lesolved to pay all its
losses without delay, and the president
leaves at once for Chicago prepared to make
immediate settlements and do all in his power
for the relief of the afflicted citizen*. The
Phienix Insurance company, ol Hartford, gives
notice that it can meet its losses honorably and
promptly, and still have a handsome margin
or surplus remaining.
The produce exchange to-day resolved to
send at once $5,000 from the exchange treasury
to the Chicago sufferer*. A larger amount will
be went subsequently. A number of merchants
met to-day at the hall of the board of trade and
adopted resolutions of sympathy with the
Chicago merchants,and appointed a committee
to solicit subscriptions for the suffering poor,
and over $11,000 were subscribed on the spot.
The annual meeting for the election of three
directors of the Krie Railway Company was
held to-day. Gould, Fisk and Lane resigned,
but were subsequently re-elected unanimously.
The representatives of Heath and Raphael w i re
present but did not vote.
WASHINGTON.
Washington, October lu.—st. Andrews
Society to-night appropriated all the funds iu
their treasury, upwards of three hundred dol
lars, for the relief of the Chicago sufferers.
Subscriptions are being made throughout the
departments and among the citizens generally
for the relief of the people of Chicago. The
fire iu that city has awakened the deepest in
terest.
The acting governor of the district of Colum
bia has called upon the citizens to meet this
evening, and devise means for the relief of the
Chicago sufferers. The plate printers of the
treasury department, ninety in number, have
contributed $775 for the relief of the Chicago
sufferers, and forwarded that, am -unt to that
city.
In consequence of the general derangement
of finances by the Chicago fire, the secretary
of w ar has extended the time for purehaso at
the great sale of quartermasters’ property, at
Jeffersonville, about the 22d uIt., for twei.tv i
days.
BALTIMORE
Baltimore, October 10. The mayor has
called meeting for to-morrow noon for relief
of the Chicago sufferers. Subscriptions opened
to-day.
Governor Baldwin, of Michigan, who is a
delegate to the Episcopal convention here, lias
telegraphed a proclamation to day,calling upr n
the citizens of the whole state of Michigan to
take immediate measures for the relief of
(,’blcago.
Two thousand dollars that was subscribed
for the missionary fund at th? Episcopal con
vention last uigbt has, by a vote of the bishop
and delegates, bpen appropriated to the relief
of Chicago.
The Corn exchange appropriated 37.000 for
Chicago. The Stock exchange also made a
contribution. William McKim subscribed $500
and advanced $10 000 for Immediate use. All
railroad companies forward supplies free. Th*'
Good Templars are personally soliciting aid
from house to house for their suffering broth
ers. The Free Masons have appointed com
mittees to solicit aid.
ALBANY.
Albany, X. Y.,October 10 At a joint meet
ing of citizens and the board of trade, $10,000
were subscribed, and commissioners appointed
to collect more. The Burgess corps have sent
$1,000; the grand commandery of Knights
Templar, $1,000; fire company No. 3, of Sara
togo, $100; Toronto Lodge of Odd-Fellows, of
Rochester, $250, and a fire company a car load
of cooked provisions. At a meeting or the citi
zens of Poughkeepsie this morning, $2,000 were
subscribed, and a committee is collecting more,
besides which large amounts of clothing and
provisions are being sent to the opera house to
be sent to-night. Auburn, Lockport, Sbenrc
tady, Hudson and most all other towns and
cities in New York state hold mass meetings
to-night to aid Chicago. Rochester sends a car
load of cooked provisions to-day.
BUFFALO
Buffalo, October 10.—A largo meeting of
sympathy for the Chicago sufferers wag held at
the hoard of trade rooms this forenoon, at which
speeches were made and action taken. The ac
tlou of the city council, appropriating $100,000
to the relief fund, waa approved. To make it
immediately available, personal guarantees
were given for the amount. The board of trade
subsequently made other generous contribu
tions. Thp second car load of provision** left
here at eleven o’clock a.m.
BOSTON.
Boston. October 10.—By order of the board
ofjtldcrmen the mayor requests a meeting of the
citizens at the city hall, at noon to-day, for the
I relief of the Chicago sufferer*.
The meeting to-day was crowded. Addresses
were made by Senator* Sumner, Wilson, and
other*. Th* treasurer of the meeting author
ized by telegraph the mayor of Chicago to draw
for $100,000 at on-*e The work of subscription
is going on.
HARTFORD
Hartford, October lO.-The fire loaur^n e
companies have not yet estimated tbi ir losses,
but doubtless the aggregate will be several mil
I lions. The officers of all the leadiug companies
vigorously assert their determination to pay
1 every dollar as rapidly a* possible. They have
already begun their arrangements to that effect.
The life insurance companies have loaned upon
real estate in Chicago, and as the land secures
i the debt, no loss Is apprehended.
MEMPHIS.

LONDON.
London, October 10.—The excitement in re
gard to the fire in Chicago increase* intensely
as the full extent of the calamity becomes
known, and subscriptions will bo opened for
the relief of the sufferer*. The banking house
of J.S. Morgan Ar Co. have telegraphed to their
correspondent* in New York depositing with
them $5,000 for the Chicago relief fund.

Washington, October 10.- a delegation of
steamboat officers from Louisville, St. I. on Is,
Pitt-burg, Detroit and Cincinnati have pre
sented to the board of supervising steamboat
inspectors a statement requesting that certain
changes be made In the regulation to render
them more practicable for western navigation.
They bad an interview with the secretary of
the treasury. Both the board and the secretary
showed a disposition to meet their views with
in the limits prescribed by law. There arc.
however, objectionable features jn the law, but
an eft' .rt will be made at the neyt session to
modify them. m
