The Ladles* Christian Union held their
annual meeting yesterday afternoon at
ibo First Congregational Church, corner of
Ann and Washington streets, Mrs. Dr. Patton in
the chair, and Mrs. Dennison Graves acting as
Secretary. Between thirty and forty ladies were
present.
FINANCIAL
Mrs. Harris, former Treasurer, presented arc
port of the llnancial condition of the society, cov
cring a period from December 1,1670, to Septem
ber a, IS7I. The report showed receipts ot
51.339.6 C, the principal Items bemg--collecuons,
SS77.CJ; sale of conceit tickets,
iroxu strawberry lunches, $366. Tbo disburse
ments were the same amount, the principal items
being—to Mrs. Kgcrton, for -services rendered,
525616; to Mrs. Miller, S4"*o; rs Holmes,
teacher of the IndustrialSchoobcsKO.
Mrs. Chester Warner, the present Treasurer,
repotted receipts of si,2tri.."3, and expenditures of
s37* 78 SI,OOO of the receipts being given for spe
cial relief, and not subject to orders for general
uses.

considered necessity to open an Industrial Mission

school. Informs us that the work was so prospering In
her hands that she had never been so encouraged to

needed all the mission labor we could give. Smco one

through passes furnished by the County Agent or by
Superintendents of railroads. Numbers ol unfortu
nates have been cared lor in our hospitals ami at the
‘Refuge, and several have been reclaimed from lives of

operated most kindly with us. and during the past
rear and up to the tire opened wide it* hospitable*

cational Department was needed. Many worthy
voimg women were struggling to obtain a practical
i-ducation, and applieation was made to the various

women have been assisted in procuring a course of i-d

REMARKS OF MRS. PATTON
Mrs. Patton detailed at some length the work
of the society, and its plans in prospect* She
t-peke especially of the Employment Bureau, say
ing that it was not a mere intelligence oilice. it
should be encouraged both by persons desiring
gcod help, and as a means cl operating among
tewing women and preventing crime. A liigb
t( mphment was paid to Miss Miller, in whose
<haigothis department of labor had been, who
has done most efficient service. The matter of u
home was touched upon. The speaker had, dur
ing the summer, visited Boston, Philadelphia,
and other Eastern cities, where especial
attention was fpaid to this matter by
Christian ladies. After the fire, the ladies of the
union had worked for special relief, receiving
sir tides for distribution liberally from tho Young
Men's Christian Association, and the Relief Bu
'xcau. Their work in this direction was extensive,
and did not appear in the reports of the Treas
urer and Secretaries. The Industrial School was
given up for the present. The boarders at the
home on Jackson street, being very much dimin
ished in numbers. they had, by consent of the
managers, opened the rooms fur female labor.
One of them was under the charge of Miss Dryer,
and the other was under the charge of
Miss Slater. Both were doing much good. It
was desirable that both should he supported by
the ladies as far as possible. Mrs. Slater was an
accomplished dressmaker, and dresses could be
made in this room at as low rates a 3 by seam
stresses at borne. In regard to a permanent in
terest ot the union In the home, that was a mat
ter for future consideration. The charges of un
kind treatment toward girls at that nldci? were
unfounded. A school where girls coddl ce edu
cated for domestic labor was most desirable. it
would be an excellent thing if donmstre labor
could be Drought into better repute. Tne deb tof

At the conclusion of Mrs. Patton’s remarks, an
oiler was made, the lady not being present, to be
one of twenty to give SI,OOO each to pay off the
debt.
THE COSSTIirtIO*.
Mis. Patton stated Unit Uieconstitution was

foimcd. She read a copy of the constitution made

The Board ol Directors ■was authorized to pre
paid a constitution to be submitted to the next
meeting of the society for approval.

Mips Dryer made some interesting remarks in
regard to the sewing room of which she is in
charge. She urged the necessity of an industrial
(?chool where working girls can oe taught to think
and reason, that being essential to the perform
ance of the commonest duties of lire. 1

spoke briefly in regard to the industrial schools of
.Europe, whence she had recently returned, prom
ising fuller Information in future.

and oaths were needed to make the doaument
binding should meet a Notary Public to-day,
lor the purpose of affixing their signatures.

AMUSEMENTS.
u SMOKE" AT THE dT.OCE,
The sensational pliy o£‘- Divorce” has been
withdrawn from the stage of the Globe, after a
long and successful run. The hill last night con
sisted of the domestic drama of “Smoke.** and
the familiar comedy, “Naval Engagements, w
the jir.st-namcd being produced hero tor the lira 1
time. The so-calleduomestic drama isa force ex
tending through one long act, and having some
veiv comic and some very pathetic passages.
The characters are hut live, aud are mostly
from the humblest walks iu life. They
are; .1 rmaU-muf, a carpenter, (Padgett)j Itrmc/i
ditto, (Martin); J/r. Jiu rfon, a retired contractor,
(Wilson); Arnislnriui's wife (Miss Burt), aud his
bi„U'T (MissMaf.dcvn). The secret spring of the
piece Is jealousy, and its moral phase, drunken
ness, and its attendant «iu. idleness. Armxtroui;
suspects his wife of inlidclltr, because she is
abroad without known cause. He rakes to drink
ing, is discharged by his employer, aud poverty
comes|upou the family. Its ill effects are some
what mitigated by Abiuuif, JLnmitrotiff's sister,
who helps the wife to ckc out a scanty subsist
ence by taking in washing, or, to speak more po
litely, starting a laundry. Things go from bad to
vrorep. aud a great crime seems imminent, when
Horton, like a good angel, appears ou the scene
aud the whole mystery Is unravelled, and the
trouble cuds. A child, secretly kept,
which caused the whole difficulty,
proves to belong to the sister of JJilco, aud not to
herself as her husband expects. Armstrong at
once reforms, his wife is made happy, and domes
tic peace, ouce more reigns over a miserable
household.
The play is rather pleasing, and one likely to
win the sympathy of an audience. The ading
was good’ la*t evening, having only the slight
stillness which attends a llrst production.
Padgett played conscientiously as usual, and
made one of two especially good points. Miss
Maddcni was applauded, in the scene iu
which the action culminate*, for the in
tensity of the denunciation of her broth
er’s abuse of the uncomplaining wife. The
Introduction of suffering from the nausea
that follow, a tlrst effort at smoking, gave Hie
piece an ait of broad farce and juvenility not
pcrfci tlv agreeable. The part was, however, ac
ceptable rendered.
The comedy of “Naval Engagements*’ was
played with Mrs. Stcmeall as Mrs. ronU/tu-, Lan

Robertson's sparkling comedy of “School” at
tracted a very large and Intelligent audience to
the Michigan Avenue. Theatre last evening. The
play hue been so often presented in this city that
any word of commendation from us "would ho
ho superfluous In the hands of the Wynd
bam Compauv it is simply irresistible.
The cast of characters last evening was con
sideraby chanced from the one which produced
the play at the Dearborn Theatre,
Li>f gc;i!-on,;md generally for the better. Of the
original cast only Messrs. WyudUum and Ouldcas
and Miss Cowell Tcmaiu. The new faces arc .dr.

Tliat ‘Mr. Mvers is determined to furnish the
citizens of the *West Division a first-class enter
tainment needs no further evidence than the au
'nounceinent that he has effected engagements

Kemble, Den Cotton, Frank Kent, and I rank
Bowles, of the now defunct Dearborn Minstrels.
Mr Kemble la acknowledged to stand at the very
head of his profession as a stage manager and
middle man or interlocutor, while hapny l»eu
Colton has few equals and no superiors us a
comedian. With Arlington and Cotton at the
ends and Kemble in the middle, the Veit side
Opera House first jmrt will be n scene of fun
next Monday night that will astonish the natives.
And in the afterpieces, what a stock (to use a
commercial phrase), of comedy talent there is
presented in the persona of Arlington, Cotton,
Kemble, Price. Doher, Kent, and Morton. Taken
as a whole, there has never been gathered in this
city u stronger combination of minstrel talent
than the one that will appear next Monday even
ing at Hie West Side Opera House.

Tlic government bond market was strong in the
old bonds, and prices advanced slightly. notwith
standing the further decline in gold, The new 5
per cent bonds were went and lower, selling be
low 10-iOs, which bear tho same rate of interest.
Stocks opened dull and steady on the second
call, and advanced slightly. Ac the close
Western Union, Beading, Korthwcatern, and Lake
Shore had advanced about i-2c, the market closing
firm with few transactions.
Money this morning is firm at 7 percent cur*
rcncy to 7 percent gold, but a short time before 3
o'clock the market became easier at 6a7 per cent;
and still later balances were offered at fl, 4, and 3
per cent, and a loan was made, for effect, at 11*2
per cent. Tin* decline below 6 per cent was as
artificial as tho recent rates above 7 per cent.
Southern State securities on the la*t call were
weak In Tennessee®. A .ter the cull South Caro
