A DEFENCE OF FIRE MARSHAL WILL-

To the Editor of The Chicago Tribune:
I have read with pain and indignation tho at
tacks which have been published regarding tho
Chicago Fire Department during tho late con
flagration, and more particularly arraigning tho
conduct and management of Firo Marshal Will
iams at the commencement and during the pro
gress of the great Are. Mr. Williams has been
denounced os “inefficient," and as being wholly
unworthy to fill tho, position he holds; and all
this complaint and abuse because the fire
was not. subdued at once, and effectually
before our city was reduced to ashes. I
happened yesterday to overhear a remark ot
tho same censorious character, made by a
gentleman who had obtained his ideas from
what he had read In the papers. Now, as I well
inowthat tho greatest injustice has been,and still
is, done tho Fire Marshal, who is entitled to, and

his entire services in tho department. Instead of
being subjected, as ho is, to tho malevolent and
senseless diatribes el those who are entirely ig.

which he invariably discharges them, I ask tho
