The perturbations m the European money mar

imed into cash acain. Tho marked preference
lor this class of investments, however, shows
that there is less confidence on.tho part of capi

The receipts of beef for the week were 8,215

The produce markets were quiet to-day, with
scarcely an exception, and the feeling was almost
exactly the tame as yesterday. In regard to wenk
lie* s in tom, oats, and provisions, and strength in
other departments. The shipping movement was
unusually quiet, all round.
The provision brokers and packers held ft nicot
ine on Friday evening, on Michigan avenue, near
Twenty-second street, and formally resolved to
meet regularly thereafter, in the same place,

Provisions were quiet and weak, owing to tho

winter extras (Star of Egypt) at $7.50, 105 brls do

Wheat was dull, but firm, at about tho outside
pi ires of yesterday. New York was quiet and
easier, and the shipping movement uero was
practically nothlng—it seldom amounts to much
on Saturday. But Liverpool was privately re
ported stronger, and the effect of all this was to
make tho great mass of operators careless
about trading .either way. The business done
was chiefly in options for December, which open
ed ut §1.22 3-4, improved to $1,231-8,161110 $1.221-2,

lots were taken for shipment, but tho trading
was principally .speculative, and the change in

The week Inst closed witnessed no important
change in the condition of the cattle market.
There was lees activity in the demand than
during the preceding week, and the prevalent
feeling was not so buoyant, but for really doelra-.
hie grades the Inquiry was sufficient to absorb
the supply and at very full prices, sales making

1,100 to 1.259 lbs average, and at f5.00a5.75 for good

Low grades have been dull throughout, with 1
prices weak and unsettled- Butchers do not at

The receipts during the past week aggregate
109,737, against 66,726 last week, 57,244 week before
last, and 60,424 for the corresponding week last
year. For the four weeks ending to-day the arri
vals have been 274,519, or 100,680 more than forthe
same period in 1870. Our receipts since January
1 have been 1,758,000; or more than 500,000 more
than to same date last year.
The past week, has been one of more than ordi
nary activity in this branch of trade, an active
packing and shipping demand existing from the
owning to the close. The receipts have been the
Irrgest ever known at this season, and rarely
have they been exceeded at any season of the
year. And yet up to Thursday night the demand
had been such os to enable sellers to keep the
pens well cleared, and to thoroughly sustain pri
ces at $4 0004.25. Later, however, owing to lew
favorable weather for cutting, and the impossi
bility for obtaining cars for the accommodation
of shippers, the demand fell on, and prices
cased up u a little; declining to $3.80a4.15.
To-day trade was quiet, the demand being
mainly confined to supplying the wants of pack
ers, and prices were weak, though not
lower than yesterday, sales -making at w.80a,i.90
for common to medium, and at 13.05tU.15 for good

The writers have taken timo to write a suoslnct
history of the past of this city, commencing
with Its infancy, and will give o truth
ful and vivid account of the great conflagration.
The work will contain many graphic incidents,
and be intercstlngto all. Everybody should have
it from the business man to the children at homo.
Wo can truly say that it will be one of the most
complete works of the kind over published. It
Is fully illustrated by our best home artists. As
to the mechanical part, all can see that this is
the handsomest volume of tho season. Wo have
not rushed into tho Held with something to
“take’* inhthe excitement of the moment, but
preferred to take time and bring out a work that
all Chicago will feel proud of, and
if wo succeed in that, shall feel amply repaid.
The city is being canvassed for other works on
this subject, and no doubt many have subscribed,
thinking they were getting Messrs. Sbeahan and
Upton’s edition, and would say that' no one, up
to this time, has offered our publication. Wo
shall now give all a chance to subscribe. Be sure
you secure tho best history of this, our great
calamity. This volume is a full octavo size, ami
our trade-mark, with a beautiful globe stamp, on
the front cover of each cloth book, of the City
Hall, as it appeared October 9. Wo have en
deavored to secure courteous canvassers, and
hope all will treat them kindly. Should anyone

Art Enterprise.
After the fire every one said that art was dead
for this winter in Chicago, hut oven at this early
day we find a largo exhibition-room filled with
paintings, the finer ohromos, engravings, and
elegant French and German plate mirrors, with a.
full line of highly finished photographs of famous
statuary. Cmis. P. Coggoahall has set apart
rooms at his factory, No. 24 West Washington
street, which are free to all. Our homo artists are
represented by late works, H. E. C. Peter
son exhibits a good portrait of Billy Gunning,
while D. F. Bigelow has some brlgh
landscapes, especially a picas in t view of Wills
borough Pond, where he hassocurod good effects,
especially In the beach and group of shrubbery.
H. A. Elkins is well represented by Western
landscapes. In his painting of “The Twin
Lakes,” of Colorado, ho has happily secured the
mistv effect he loves. But his ocst picture Isa
bright, glowing srene at the head waters of the
Arkansas, which has been painted since the fire,
and tiHs been successfully handled, especially in
his mountain cliffs and running water. This will
be a popular picture, for it excels all of Elkins’
previous efforts.
