A CHEJiTTST’S DISCOVERT.
Sugar from Corn for 3 Cents a
Pound,

Every attempt that has been made in this
countrS* to produce sugar in paying quanti
ties, in other method than by uso or the eauo
'iu the South, has proved a failure. In Frauco
enormous quantities of hect sugar arc made
every year, and tho manufacturers have
grown rich; hut no such luck has attended
the beet-sugar experimenters in this coun
try, though they entered into tho work upon
a largo scale in Illinois.

There is no doubt about it, for many people
in this city have tasted and seen it, and are
satisfied that a great and invaluable discov
ery in tho art of producing sugar has been
made.
The discoverer—or inventor—of this new
process is Mr. H. G. Wcincrt, of this city. His
character stands hijrh in the community—an
important requisite in insuring belief iu his
experiments. Ho is a German, and is well
posted in chemistry, or ho never wouldhave
achieved success in his search after sugar in
a com field. He owned a tannery, which was
burned down about eighteen montlis ago.
Some effect or other that ho had noticed, of
certain chemicals used in his trade upon the
potato led him to believe thatsugar might be
obtained from this esculent, and, after the
destruction of his tannery, he commenced
experimenting with that end in view. He
found the sugar in it, and also found that its
production from that source could not bo
made profitable. The cost of stock was too
high, for one thing.
But Mr. Wcincrt had the zeal, and pos
sessed the faith, that has characterized every
inventor who lias blessed the world with the
products of bis thoughts. He went to work
with corn, and so devotedly that ho became
very poor, consumiughis means until he had
used up everything hut his little homestead.
One of our citi zeus stepped iu, told him to go
op, and held him np. recently he made his
discovery, and made it known to his friends.
It is a sugar that will he iu demand by
confectioners, wine-makers, and brewers,
hut will not he popular for table use until
after further experimenting. Over $70,000
worth of sugar is used in this citv every
year in making wine, alone—and the esti
mates as to confectioners and brewers are
not at hand. This discovery will doubtless
work a revolution iu the use of sweetening
in those occupations.
Mr. Weincrt says that with corn at forty
cents a bushel, this sugar can he delivered to
purchasers at the factory for three and a half
ccuts per pound. White corn is better than
yellow iu this business, because there is no
color to he removed.
Of course, Mr. Wcincrt keeps the secret of
the production to himself; hut some of our
best citizens aro going to furnish capital with
which to erect works. Tho building and ma
chinery will cost about SB,OOO. and tho ven
ture will be made with a capital of from
SIO,OOO to $40,000. A stock company will be
called for in a few days, with a capital of
$50,000. There is no doubt that it will he a
success.
In less than ten years from now, the com
fields of the West will he supplying half the
nation with sugar. Com sugar will ho to
tins country what heet sugar is to France—a
hleasmg to the people at large.

A meeting was held yesterday in the Bishop
Potter Memorial Home, which adjoins the
Episcopal Hospital, for training Christian
•women, at which Rev. Dr. Howson, Dean of
Chester. England, made an address to the
sisters of the Memorial Home, probationers,
associate sisters, and other co-workcrs iu ad
joining parishes. Among the associate sis
ters are Mrs. C. C. Biddle, who is charged
with training the probationer*, and directing
the work of the full sisters. The other asso
ciates are Miss Louisa Claxton. Mrs. "William
"Welsh, Miss Lillie S. Pcchin, Miss Elizabeth
M. Turner, and Miss E. Is T Biddle.
Mr. "Wm. "Welsh, who, under the Bishop of
the diocese, has the charge of the Memorial
Home, said that though the House is not yet
live years old, it gives evidence of being an
infant Hercules. The Church now fully
recognizes the importance of women's work
and the necessity for training thorn and or
ganiziug their services. One inmate of the
house has just returned from Africa, where
she has spent four years as a missionary. She
will go back to Africa as soon as she has rc
oruitedlier strength. Sister Anna is at the
Santee Sioux Mission, iu Nebraska. Sister
Elizabeth is atrtho Yankton Sioux Mission,
iu DacotahTerritory: botharodoiugeflicicnt
v sendee to the Indians, in teaching, visiting
the sick, etc. Sister Emma is present. She has
been detailed for the past two years, and has
succeeded in forming a parish for working
people, and although the church is fully or
ganized with its vestry and minister, yet her
sendees cannot bo dispensed with until she
has trained her co-workers to take full
charge of the night school, sewing schools
and Sundaj’ schools, mothers' meeting, and
the visiting from house to house. Sisters
Georgette aud Joanna are similarly engaged
in Aramingo. Sister Hannah is employed iu
the wards of the hospital, while Sister Sophie
aud others are engaged with some of the as
sociate sisters in the large missionary work
done in connection with the Hospital Chapel

cite prejudice. Ho urged that there were
two obvious leading principles which ought
to bo taken for granted iu matters of this
kind, _ First. That God has given to women
capacities for usefulness qtnto difl*ercnt from
those which he has given to men. Secondly
That in the Church ot|Christ full scope ought
to be furnished for the exercises and devel
opments of such powers. As to the practical
working out of these principles, ho said he
conceived that they had two starting points,
which ought to bo kept distinctly in view’
namely: That all such capacities of women
for Christian work were capable of enlarge
ment and improvement by the process of
training, and That the practical exercise of
such powers ought to bo in harmony with
and in subordination to the general system
of church work.
