A meeting of the holders of policies In tho various non-paying insura nco companies was hold last evening at Standard Hull, at which a very large number of gentlemen were bresent. Tho lion. Isaac K. Arnold was called uponto preside, Mr. Henry Leopold acting as Secretary. The Chairman called upon Mr. Gray to state the object of the meeting. M>. Gray said he un derstood it to be to form an association lor com pelling the insurance companies to pay in foil. A committee of three had been appointed to ex amine tlic accounts of defunct Insurance com panies, but hud found the work so laborious, both to themselves and the policy-holders, that they were compelled to resign. Str. Coolbaugh said he had seen an article in Tins TmnvNK iu the morning, and had been struck with the wisdom and force of the suggestions there made. He had made up his mind that it was the duty of the merchants of Chicago to de termine by their actions tho mutual relation ex isting between them and the insurance compa nies. especially in view of the fact of the Immense difference existing' Iwtween their proposed settle ments and their published assets. It second necessary, before justice could be done, that the Chicago policy-holders should select a wfso com mittee |o bo sent to New York with instructions to snake the fullest Investigations. He f-It com pelled to say there was as much disposition In New York companies to drive hard bargains as those of Chicago; and yet the press of tho whole country had severelv censured these homo companies. Ho thought every suspended company in Now York, Boston, Hartford, and other cities, shmildbomade to offer a fairer settlement than 25 i»er rent, leaving, as they didln many instances, a surplus of hundred* of thoiisandfl of dollars.
