He was iu bed when the great tiro of Octo ber 9 broke out. and when he saw the rcffoctlon in the sky he went to his boat, which was lying in the Illinois Central slip, to see if bis men were there. He found them, and started up the stream, with the intention of going to the foot of Illinois 'street, anti saving i«>ii-cUi>w uuuawoii ing being No. 150 on that thoroughfare. When ha' reached Rush Street bridge he saw no other tugs around, and realizing that the lire van approaching rapidly, and that It would soon be on the docks, lie concluded to remain lathe vicinity of the bridge, and save as much property' as possible. The lire soon made, its appearance on tho wharves west of Rush street bridge, anti, observing that It was eating its way cast with alacrity, ho passed out his hawser ta several vessels and townl tlu-iu into the lake. Upon returning he found that the propellers Ira Chaffee, Skylark, and side-wheel steamer Manito woc we ic crowded with men. women, and chil dren, who had been driven on board by the tiro, there being no other place for them to seek shel ter. The commanders i f these vessels had steam up, and wen* ready to leave their moorings, but tin Ir endues were powerb-es to move them an inch* the wind being so stiong that it locked thorn, as it were, to the wharf. When told of this, Oaptaln Gilson towed tho vessels one by* one into the lake, and thereby saved tho lives of all on lioard. Had not his lug Ikjui there, evciy one ou board would have perished, us there was ho available avenue of escape. After these vessels were gone, many persons assembled on tho docks, and they would nave been burned to death or drowned liad not they been taken on bona*! the Magnolia and carried to tho propeller Ira Chaffee, which was kept at the North Pier to receive anv who should make their appearance on the wharf. One man, who was nearly frightened to death, jumped into tho river, and was pi'ked up by the Magnolia. After having the propellers In tho lake, tho tug rail into the river again, and the brave Cap tain, seeing that the wharf lines of several schooners were already ou tire, and feeling contl dmtllmt. If the vessels Ignited, the warehouses facing tlio river, then untouched, would surely he destroyed, picked out those nearest the ware houses and towed them away, liS continued the good work all night, and saved an immense amount of property. Ho stopped his tug at the North Tier, took aboard as many ns the decks would ac commodate, and lauded them ou the West Side. There were too many people for one boat to take to a place of safety, and he reported the fact to Captain Crawford, President of the Towing Association, who scut other tug boats to assist in tho work, and they wore en gaged all day Monday and until Tuesday after noon in moving the crowd from the lake shore. With a view of placing tho matter before the public,who nr© always willing.when satisfied of tho worthiness of the applicant, to contribute something to show their appreciation of heroic conduct, a number of prominent gentlemen, among them Mr. J. K. Buckingham, have drawn up a petition and signed their names to it. Of all cities, Xew York and Chicago were believed to be the two in which lurked or opculv threatened the worst peril to tho po litical and social purity and stability of onr most cherished institutions. In Chicago, the very small minority of scaups, whoso concentrated energy and impudence had bad full swing, while tho responsible classes wore' absorbed in affairs of prosperous business, were thoroughly wiped oat. A municipal government was chosen, almost by popular acclaim, of men whose active fame is unsullied, whose private lives are exemplary. So glorious an uprising and triumph of that which is excellent and of good report upon 'the discomfiture and ruin of that which was altogether evil and debased, is cause for na tional gratnletion.
