An accident happened at the Kinzle street
railroad bridge, yesterday afternoon, which re
sulted In the drowning of one man, and, it is
feuml. the fatal injuring of another. Abont 4
o'clock,«s the locomotive Wheeler, of the North
western Bailway, drawing a passenger train of
eight cars, was approaching the east end of the
bridge, the tugboat Geo. B. McClellan, struck the
bridge with such force as to swing It round, the
engine and tender running into toe river. The
baggage car escaped a like fate by the breaking
of the coupling. On the locomotive were Ed.
Pierce, the' engineer, and Wm. Lee, a clerk in the
Purchasing Agent’s ofilee„wbo was going to his
home in Elgin. The fireman, Charles llali. seeing
that the engine was sure lo go overboard. Jumped
eff lust In time to save bis life. Lee and Pierce
hod not time to Jump, and both were precipitated
into tho water. The mishap was witnessed by
several people, and they succeeded in rescuing
Pierce, but could not find Lee. who was' probably
thrown beneath the engine. Pierce was severely
injured Internally, and was sent to his home on
Lincoln street. Tho Captain of the tug boat.
Duane Rider, and the Engineer. Morris Shay, were
arrested and locked up in tho Madison street sta
tion. Rider says thnt he whistled for the bridge
to open, but seeing the train approaching, knew
it would not be swum:, no slackened down speed,
and came up to the bridge very slowly. When he

buck, but the forward progress of tne boat was
not chocked entirely. She struck the bridge very

and the catch coming out of the socket, the bridge
