Although men may, by unlawful reasoning on

The first relates to private confession. When
ver a human soul is possessed by a searching

of forgiveness. And then, on the
lotbgr hand, frivolous and worldly persons,

retribution, seek for the sane assurance. Ad
vantage is taken by some teachers in the
jChnrcb of these two entirely different spiritual
I ftftUs W insist upon private confession to a
priest either the absolute duty of all Christians,
or as essential to any high attainments in reli
gious life. Meantime, the fact that pardon is
granted to any child of God on bis repentance,
accompanied by prayer and the
promises in Christ, as troll as in the •ulfc'df the
means of grace, is utterly passed by. The
teaching of the Church in this matter is plain
and dear.
She permits and offers to her children the
opening of their griefs in private to some min
ister of God’s Word. But she does not make this
the first resort. She does not provide tor its
frequent recurrence or uniform practice; she
does not impose by ecclesiastical ordinance; she
docs not hold or declare it necessary for the for
giviness of sins, or the attainment of high de
grees o! spiritual advancement; nor does she
connect with it blessings which can be secured
Only by its observance. She simply offers and
commends this privilege to those of her children
who cannot quiet their own consciences by self
examination, immediate confession to God, with
faith in Christ, repentance and restitution.
Wherefore to make this seeking of comfort and
counsel not exceptional, but customary, not
free, but enforced, (if not by actual law, at least
by moral obligation and spiritual necessities),
is to rob Christ's provision of its mercy, and to
change it into an engine of oppression and a
source of corruption. History demonstrates this.
The experience of families, and even of nations,
shows that the worst practical evils are insepa
rable from this great abuse. To pervert the
godly counsel and advice which may quietadis*
turbed conscience Into tbe arbitrary direction
which supplants the conscience is to do away
with that sense of moral responsibility nndcr
which every man "shall give account of him*
self to God.”
Another point of danger is a tendency toward
Eainl-worsUip, and especially Its culmination in
the worship of the Blessed Virgin. The annals
of our race under the covenant dispensations, as
well as beyond their limits, show that there is
nothing to which our fallen nature is more fear
fully inclined than the worship of the creature
rather than the Creator. And this propensity
to evil has always found its most attractive
development in a sensuous disposition to deify
and adore the tenderness and love of woman
hood. The error of which we speak has arisen
chiefly from this propensity of our nature, and
t found its apology in a perverted view of the
veneration due to her whom “all generations*’
arc to “call blessed.”
There is no sin more continuously and de
cisively marked by the signal dtspleasure'of God
than that of idolatry in its manifold varieties.
Hence, although wc do not anticipate a general
prevalence of tendencies to Mariolatry, which
some have done much to encourage, we never
theless feel that their slightest indication de
mands our immediate and decided reprobation.
The bare suggestion that the intercession of the
Virgin Mary, or any other Saint, is In any way
to be sought in our approaches to the Throne of
Grace, is an indignity to the One only mediator
and intercessor which we, His Apostolic wit
nesses, cannot too strongly nor distinctly forbid
in His holy and all-sufficient name.
As fostering tendencies of which wc regret to
see any tokens among us wc must not full to
point out the danger arising from devotional
and doctrinal books, alien in their character to
the whole spirit of the Liturgy, which have of
late years been insidiously multiplied on Eng
land and America. Such works are chielly bor
rowed from sources confessedly hostile to our
communion, and tend only to weaken and un
dermine the loyally otour people, and especially
of our youth, to the primitive faith and worship
of our Church. Moreover, let it be borne in
mind, that the rich treasury of our own de
votional authors is full of all things that minis
ter to edification, while the inspired Psalter and
other Holy Scriptures, too little studied by most
of us in this age of hurry and unrest, leave
wholly without excuse this disposition to seek
such aids as wc here pointedly condemn.
The books just mentioned are not the only
ones against which our people must be warned.
Publications arc scattered through our parishes,
the whole aim of which is to undermine the
legitimate authority of the chief pastors of the
Church, to inculcate irreverence, to stir up
strife, to excite suspicion, to advocate the fac
tious maintenance of groundless opinions, to
lead to division and schism. It was the'solemn
counsel of St. Paul to “mark those that cause
divisions” in Inc Church, and to avoid them and
their teachings.
Nothin" is more unreal than the popular idea
that our Church is a middle waj, elaborately
contrived as a compromise between opposing
systems. But in the nature of things, as a wit
ness to primitive truth, she is always the subject
as was the Church in the days oftl.' Apostles,
to opposing lines of assault. On the one side is
the temper of the Jew, and on the other that o
.the Greeks. Our conflict on the right hand
and on the left is and must continue to be with
superstition and lawlessness, irreverence and
unbelief.
Now, though little alarm is felt in view of a
disposition on the part of some to detract from
the tcslimoncy which wc arc ever to bear to the
Faith once delivered to the Saints," and if not
to mutilate, yet to fall below the language of
liturgy, and to undervalue its doctrinal teach
ings, we must never forget that the pecu
liar dangers are. those of irreverence, law
lessness and unbelief, and that all such detrac
tions ministers directly to the worst influences
of the irreligion that cloaks itself in in pretences
of “science, falsely so called." Their negative
character, indeed, accounts for the fact alreadv
noticed, that errors in this direction excite little
anxiety, and the habits of our people, formed
necessarily under the imperfect ministrations of
our ecclesiastical nonage, are naturally the re
verse of Sensitive to omissions and neglect in
carrying out the system of the Book of Common
Prayers. But, with increase of opportunities
and of ministers, these things arc less excusable.
Wc hold that, if nothing more than what is
clearly vindicated by our rubrics is to be per
mitted in one direction, wc are bound in the
veriest justice to condemn any counterpart, dis
position to diminish in any manner from their
prescriptions as to order and worship.
These crying evils of irreverence and law
lessness are setting in through many currents
and from opposite quarters; they are, in truth,
so closely connected and so invariably go hand
in-hand, that they may well bo spoken of to
gether. The irreverence which lightly esteems
holy mysteries leads direefty to lawless viola
tions of the order of their ministration; the ir
reverence which scorns the due authority of
those whom Christ has set for the Government
of the Church leads as directly to open disobe
dience and the reception of solemn vows and
binding obligations. “Despisingdominion" and
'speaking ill of dignities" are counted in Holy
Scripture as sins of no ordinary magnitude; and
they ore not less sins to-day than they were in
the Apostolic age.
Cultivate, then, beloved, to the dally walk of
your Christian life, in your’houses and by your
firesides—above all, in tbc Temple of God,
where Bis holy name is worshipped—such a
spirit of reverence as shall manifest itself in
word and act, and such a temper of submission
and obedience to what Is duly ordained and ap
pointed as may make for tbc Church's ]>eace
and for your own great spiritual good. So shall
brethren “dwell together in unity," and you
shall see “Jerusalem in prosperity all your life
long."
A Uniform Divorce Law—New Movement

A rather remarkable movement has been pat on
foot here by Mrs. Admiral Dahigran, Mrs. General
Sherman and the other ladles who are taking an
active part In opposing women*# suffrage, the
scheme being nothing leu than to completely out
flank the suffragists of the Tilton-Woodbull school.
These ladle* do net believe that tbe constitution as
It now stands gives to women the right to vote
and they are determined to deprive the others of
their so-eall|d Sixteenth Amendment by oeoapyiog
tbe ground themselves by an amendment providing
for a uniform system of divorce. Their principal
argument In favor of this new measure Is that If the
courts in other States are obliged to reoogoise In
diana divorces as valid, though they are generally
obtained by fraud, the tribunals of that State
virtually absorb tho whole divorce business of the
country and imperil the property and marital rights
of every woman from Maine to California. This
they think, makes the question one of soeh nationa
importance as to reqntro the interferanoeof Con
gress, under tbe constitutional safeguards; and
they desire the constitutional provision they are
cckiog to be called the Sixteenth Amendment”
They are going to work like real high-born ladies
to encompass their ends, and design having the
mcasoro first introduced Into the Senate rather
than the House, since the former Is a body of muob
more decorum and dignity than tbe latter.’ What

of the amendment, both as Chairman of the Judicia
ry Committee and as th* purest and boat of the Son
nteranf thoUnited States. It is believed that this
measure will secure for American women all the
ritbts they care to exercise to public affairs and
saro them from tbo wrongs of inch pernicious
legislation as is the dugraea of Indiana. Tbo flank
movement on the suffragists by appropriating their
favorite amendment is regarded as a good stroke
and one that will put at rest tbo agitation of a ques
tion which a few ambitions women, by driving iti
best friends into obsenrity, hare made disreputable.
It is not intended to make the amendment too
radical, and it is only feared that it may be defeated
by the promoters of so-called reform overloading
andkillicgit. A lively scrimmage among the fe
male politicians is expected, and the movement
cannot fail to add new features to that remarkable
lobby in which women play such varied and im
portant parts.

•session. The deliveries of gram on toller the month
were moderately heavy, as few people care to
carry grain longer than they arc obliged to do so with
the enormous insurance rates now charged. Five per
cent la heavy enough, bat that figure fails to express
the extent of the charge. Most of our gram is
carried on short rate, for which higher
prices arc charged. The two-day rale is equivalent
to a charge of4l per cent per annum, and the ten dav
rate, which la the most usual in summer, is 4 per
cent, or 18 per cent per annum. Grain Insurance at
these rales must soon become a luxury which only a
Very few can Indulge in. The wisdom of the pal icy
which declares seek enormous insurance on struc
tures that are "built with special reference as to fire

lumbermen, who take it all the more readily on
acconut of the overweight. New pork was a shale

one to two million lbs halves peaches, 400,000 B»*

market, though at present the demand from neither

CATTLE—Received to-day, l,fi00: received since
Saturday. 5,600. The supply continuing light, and
advices from the market* below being of a cheerful
character, a firm feeling mill prevails in this market.
There was not a largo attendance of Eastern buyers,
but the fov who did pat In an app aranoe evidently
meant business, aud holders of desirable lOU found
rcadv purchaser*, aud at full previous rates. The
offerings of really choice beeves were limited to a few
car-loads, bat of fair to good grades the supply wax
more liberal, and numerous tales were effected at

5.53. Several feeders wero in the yards to-day
and anxious to bny, but prices were

prices may bo sustained, as the Eistirn markets now
wear a better, healthier look, than al any pre

HOGS—Received to-day, 9.000; received this week,
28.700. The fresh receipts, t* trill he seen, were liberal,
but they fell considerably below the number looked
for. and this fact, while It did not enable sellers to re
gain any part of the reduction suffered yesterday,
operated l« prevent a funher decline. Hatchers,
packers, and shippers were In attendance and operat
ing, bat the demand from neither source was at ail
urgent, and trading was alow from the opening to the

new, and by the middle of the present month the
packing season will be in fait blast. Two now pack
me houses, of large capacity—Armour A Co.'s, to
take the place of the one destroyed last summer, and
S. W. Alien!on's—have just been completed, so that,
notwithstanding the destruction of the North Side
packing houses, Chicago has to-day larger facilities
lor pork packing than in any former season, and,
Judging from present indications, the season will be
one of more than ordinary activity. On tbc North
Side Kugglcs Co., T. B. Booth A Co.,
Smalley Bros., and Fernald Crosby,
were burnt out. bat these were
small concerns, and confined to catting dressed bogs.
Their aggregate capacity waa about -10.000. The mar

SHEEP—Received to-day, 1,500; received this

The market for cargo lumber was active to-day. to
the extent of the offerings, buyers being numerous,

ble, however, that prices have about reached their
