Paring the pari two days the water supply has greatly diminished throughout the city, so that In the outskirts none but basement hydrants yielded any tUng, and there In small quantities. The reason of this sudden deficiency Is that, yielding to the de mands of the people who required water for fatally use sod for building purport*, the Board of Public Works has caused the water so be turned on In the burned districts of the North and booth Division. Owing to the numerous Instances wbero the service pipe Usd been severed by the fire, a great waste of water has resulted in the North Division, amounting to 0.000,000 gallons per dav. there being very little waste on the boatb Side. This could not have been eaeiiv prevented, as. until the water was turned on, there was no way of ascertaining where the leakages were. Now that they have been discovered, the full ■force of the Water Department has bean set to work cloelng up the leaky pipes—a labor of considerable difficulty, as la many carta the street cut-offs nro covered by masses of brick and stone dthri*, which must be cleared away before the necessary repairs can bo made. Several Occupants of Public Barracks, and BecipienU of Public Supplies, Arrested for Drunkenness and Bpouting Their Buttons for Whiskey. Over one hundred and fifty men and women were before the Police Justice* yesterday, charged with drunkenness and disorderly conduct. There were also fifteen arraigned for having stolen goods -In their possession. The former were fined from $1 to $lO apiece, and the latter were held for trial, or had their cases continued. At the West Hide Court there were eight men and women, who live In the barracks, on the comer of Elizabeth and Madison V reels. These people became drunk, and created such a disturbance that the interference of tho police was necessary to preserve order. The Justice slated that a great many of those who were being provided for were behaving shamefully, and the worst “cares*' that came before him lived in the barracks. How these ungrateful people procure tho whiskey they drink Is a Question which the Relief Committee should consider. It Is'generally be lieved that they sell the provisions given them—the quantity dealt ont to one person being more than enoegb for two. The number of arrests lucrea-e everyday, and something ought to be done to pre vent the pnrchaolag of whiskey and tho drinking of it within tho building* erected for shelter, and not fur tippling houses.
