There was some talk, yesterday and tho day before, of a strike for higher wages among the bricklayers, but no action in that di rection was taken by the men employed in that important trade. A strike among the masons would of course suspend all work in the burnt district, except tho mere clearing up of rubbish, find would throw out of em ployment not only the bricklayers themselves but the carpenters, [stone cutters, furniture makers, gas fitters, plumbers, iron workers, roofers, machinists, blacksmiths, locksmiths, tin smiths, glaziers, painters, plasterers, and all the affiliated tralcs, which cannot pro gress an inch till the brick walls arc ready for them to work upon. Is not this a dismal lime tor such a strike Is not this a tatal moment for the suspension of industry and wages A few weeks hence the rigors of winter will be upon us, and we shall have work enough upon our h nds to relieve the involuntary sufferers by tho fire without tak ing upon ourselves the additional task of supporting those who might obtain work at higher wages than prevailed before the fire if they would. To the credit of the bricklayers be it said, they hare lints far resisted the appeals of the mischief-makers, and kept steadily at work They are now receiving 33 per cent higher wages than peforc the fire, and it is simply impossible for builders who have lost almost everything they possessed, by the flames, to pay a-further advance. It Is now considered an advantage, in some respects, for prop erty to have been mortgaged to the former great money lenders, such as the Connecticut Mutual Ufe, Union Mutual ofMnine, and the various private cap italists who transacted tbeir business through a few well-known agents in this city.
