A writer.in the American edition of
Chambers' Edinburgh Journal, published
before the fire, staled that in the neigh*
bovhood of Chicago are enormous deposits
of “oil-bearing limestone,” of which

Death of P. P. W. Peck—Another one of
the Old Settlers Gone..
Mr. I*. F. W. Peck, for forts* years an inhabitant
of Chicago, died at the residence of hi* son Ferdi
nand, No. 102S Wabaih'avonue, on the evenin': of
the 23d of October, 1671, at 8:30 o'clock p. m.,from
injuries received froiira fall on the Saturday even**
Ingprevloos; Mr. Peck was Justly reputed as a
man of largo-wealth; but there arc few-very few.
Indeed—ot the general public who discussed bis
merit* that even knew his worth. He came to
Chicago a* early as the year ISM. He had some
small mean* with which be opened a More In 1834.’
on the northeast comer of South Water and
LaSalle.,. streets. 'The" lot bn which
this store stood be recently cos*
veyed to one of his sons. Ilia business enter
prise and great sagacity in forecasting the rise of a
great commercial centre on the site of Chicago,
even atthal early day. was most remarkable. Ills
faith in the future operated ns the stimulus to the
purchases of lots he made at low prices when
or here were unable to realize any value on tbs land
as town lots. The Diet existed that’the military
garrison at Fort Dearborn and its environs, con*
mined then nearly all thet white inhabitants, of
Chicago, as well a# nearly ml then west of Lake
Michigan. This was discouraging to the specula
tors of that day, in the midst of a waste of land
containing millions of acres -held
for sale by the government. And Mr.
Peck was one of- those not -discouraged.
Ills policy ever was to pay as he went, and never
trade upon credit. This policy during the mone
tary crisis which swept this country In 1537, in
volving thousands in ruin and bankruptcy, saved
him. and left tho foundations secure upon which
he afterward erected his fortune.
Perhaps among the old settlers of Chicago, there
never was a man so much misapprehended as Mr.
Peck, especially bv strangers to nlscharacter, lie
was a man of genuine charity ami true feeling. But
he had an Inveterate dWIKo to all ostentation and
firide. lie avoided notice ethcreforc, and ic
used to giro on public occasions. Yet
contrary to what was popular opinion as be knew,
he gave thousands in charity to Indigent and
poor persona annually. lie despised all thum*
and pretences. Ho despised-and avoided pnjdlc

The Board, of Trade rooms were so densely
crowded to-day that It was almost impossible to
move around, and everybody wished fervently that
the new rooms will soon be ready for occupancv.
Of course many of those in attendance did nothin-’
except to look on; but the.aggregate of trading
was large, almost up to the average of the same
