Indianapolis. Oct. IS.—Tbo miners in the Clay County coal fields of this State stopped work on Monday morning, until the operators bad announced ihclr position on the proposed ■trike. Tho demand of the miners is a reduc tion in the weight of a ton of coal from 2,100 to 2.000 pounds: in mines where 2,000 pounds make a ton, an advance of five cents for mining is demanded. At the present rates, the miners receive from SI.OO to $1.25 per ton. vary ing with the thickness ol the vein. At noon on Monday tbo miners, 2,000 in number, held a meeting in the woods near Brazil, aod re solved to allow those who were engaged in the mines when the propos 'd advance was allowed to go on with their work, instead of organising a general strike, os was at first proposed. Th* Carbon Block Coal Company acceeded at once to tbo demands, and they now pay $1.31 per ton for mining. They employ 50 workmen. At a meeting of the operatives, held at Brazil on Monday evening, it was agreed not to accede to the demands of the miners, aod work will be stopped in all the mines save those of the Carbon Company.
