Bank Vaults.
The report circulated yesterday that the vault of
the Union National Bank bad been blown op is
without any foundation whatever. It Is believed
that the vault* of every bank In the city have pre
served tholr contents unharmed.
Mr. Haines, President of the State Savings Insti
tution, has gone to New York to attend personally
to converting •ecnritles owned by tho oank into
money. Thu larger part of the securities were re
moved from the building the night of the fire, and
the officers of the bank have no fears bnt that
everything It the valults is safe. They are fitting
up an office, and have ordered a safe from St.
Bonis, and will commence paying depositors as
soon as possible. They have also bought brick,
and an architect is making plans tor a new build
ing on tho site of the old one, which will be fire
proof if possible.
Thomas B. Bryan Co. (Fidelity Safe Deposito
ry), No. 143 East Randolph street, opened their
safes on Wednesday. There was no beat in them
or the vanllau every paper and every dollar of the
millions on deposit there being safe. Charles Wil
son took out $30,000 in good bright greenbacks.
The firm of Bryan «t Co. haw established an office
In the ruins, and invite business men and
others to bring their valuables and money
there, and deposit them free of charge until they
can get better accommodations. The place Is

a fall scale just as soon as too pecuniary arrange*
dents will permit, which will be In a day or two—
probably by the first of next week. A goodly
number of them are busy In helping to distribute
food and clothing to the destitute. The remainder
arc fitting up offices in the vicinity of the tempo*
rary Board of Trade rooms, mostly on Canal and
Wert Washington streets; pending which their
headquarters are at Nos. 51 and 53 Canal street,
where the board will dohueinesß till the Chambt rof
Commerce can be rebuilt. The feeling today was
50 per cent more hopeful than yesterdav. Reports
were received and read by the Secretary, In rapid
succession, announcing the cheering prospects
that banks and insurance companies wilt speedily
redeem their obligations to the public. There was
some grumbling about the proposal to par only a
part of the deposit? in bank at ouco. but the great
majority viewed the situation cheerfully, aa being
much better than had been expected*

was not reported. It is expected that grain will
he moved out much more rapidly towards Monday,
as the hacks will be able to make advances by that

The Chamber of Commerce Association bas re
ceived SIOO,UU) to proceed with the reconstruc
tion of their bnildlug. It is thought by some that
an effort will bo made to Induce the Board of
Trade to seek other quarters than that. In such a
case the Chamber ol Commerce would probably
oreanixa a new board under their charter.
The provision dealers held n meeting at noon
today, but accomplished nothing. It was pro
posed by some to form a separate organixallonr to
meet in the South Division, the project being sup
ported by a minority, which included our ht-aviert
packers. No vote was taken on the matter, and it
will probably be considered again at an early day.
The sale of tbe Chamber of Commerce was
3«nod to-day, and the contents rescued in first
ms condition.

The condition of this market Is about the same
as noted in yesterday’s report. Aside from sup*
plying the current wants of local batcher*, there
was little or nothing doing, shippers being kept out
of the market by the absence of bank accommoda
tion. The receipts of stock were meager, reaching
only 1,145 cattle. 2,870 hogs, and 131 sheep, but the
wants of the trade were fully met, and values re
main withont Important change. Sales of cattle
were reported at f3.00a4.00 for common to good
batcher’s stock; atf 1.1554A0 for common to choice
bogs and at f3.50a1.75 for common to good mat*
ton sheep. It is believed that the coming week
will witness a revival of trade In this department,
though it may be a fortnight yet before trade re
gains IU wonted activity. Beef packing, which
commenced a week ago, will be resumed as carlv
as practicable, and upon a liberal scale. It Is esti
mated that folly SS,tWO head will be packed here
daring the present season, the bulk of which, of
course, will be Texas cattle. In the mean time.
Western shippers should conduct their movements
