The Board of Police and Ftre Commisaionerg 
met at i o'clock yesterday afternoon, for the pur 
pose of continuing their investigation as to the 
cause of the fire, aad the other circumstances 
connected with it needing investigation. At 3 
o'clack the foreman of Ryersoa A Oa.'s lumber 
yard had not appeared, and, he being the only 
witness left to examine, tag hoard declared that 
tne examination wan concluded, and dismissed 
their 
official 
stenographer. 
After 
the 
board adjourned from its regular session the 
foreman arrived, and was subjected to an ex-
am to at ion as regards the moaey paid to firemen. 
He testified that at the time of the Are the Chi-
cago and foreign companies had done such ex-
calk nt service that the owners of property-de-
termined upon making up a parse tor them. The 
sum raised was 13,900 which was distributed 
among Ave or six companies. Mat. Bennert the 
Third Assistant Fire Marshal, received gaoo,
