occurrence Saturday evening near the
town of Auburn, about six miles een
this city. Andrew Snellivg. the fifteen
year old sonof Mr. Allexauder Snellivg,
who lives near Auburn, went over to
the house of Marcellus Whittaker, who
lives near by. and he and Marvin Whit
taker, son of M. Whittaker, were amus

a small rifle. While Marvin Whit
taker was loading the rifle it was acci
dently discharged, the bullet entering
the left breast of Suellings, resulting 1o

RAILROAD ACCIDENT

LYNCHBURG, Vai., September 9.—
Another very sorious railroad wreck
occurred early this morning onthe Nor
folk and Western at High Bridge, six
miles below this city. which oceasioneq
the death of the fireman and two of the
brakemen injured. The wrecked train
was the fourth section, No. 58, gong
east, and became stalled on a heavy
grade approaching the bridge. The
trains following were flagged. While
at a stop seven cars from the
fourth gection broke loose and ran back
irto the fifth section. The engine was
thrown from the track and caught un
derneath it fireman MeDowley, of Pe
tersbarg. who was so seriously ivjured
that death ensued in a few hours.
Fireman McDowley's remains were
taken to Petersburg this afternoon, and
the engineer left for home,

reply this evening to an inquiry from a
friend in Washington: “Me. Cox is
slowly rallying and hopes of recovery

Sanday morning, about 3:15 o'clock.
Mr. CL. Barred, who boards at Mus,
M. L. Spotswood ’s, No. 715 east Grace
street, was sound asteep in his room in
the third story. He heard a poise,
which partially awskened him, Look
ing around he saw something which
quickly caused him to get wide awake.
What Mr. Barret: saw in the dim

through the pockets of his coat, which
was hanging across a chair, and the
robber’s hand was at the time on the
pocketbook.
Mr. Barrett somewhat startled at thie
unusual scene, asked, Who is that? 7
The robber at hearivg the question
broke out of the door with Mr. Barrett,
pistol in hand, after him. The thief
was too quick, however, le suc
ceeded in getting over the steps

which was open, and disappeared.
The robber is described as a well
built mulatto of about five feet six or
eight inches hich, How the negro got
in the house seems to be a mystery,
There was no evidence of breaking into

Nothing was found missing in the

Mr. Barrett says he regrets he could
not get close enough to the negro, as he
flew down the steps, to put a ball in
