The annual reunion of Company Ag
sociation took place in Murphy's Hotel
last night. There were twenty-five mem
bers of the organization present and two
invited guests,



The meeting took place shortly before 5
o'clock, and there was a very pleasant in
terchange of reminiscences.


Mr. James N. Boyd, on behalf of the
Committee on Erection of the Monument
to the Dead Members of the Company,
made a report. He stated that solicita
tions for subscriptions had met with a
hearty response, and the fund was grow
ing rapidly. Upon motion, the committee
was continued, with full powers to act,
and théy were instructed that if they
found it necessary to report before the
next meeting they were to advise with
the president, who would call a special
meeting to take final action upon their
recommendations,

demy last night had been commensurate
with the enthusiasm evinced by those
who were present, there would not have
been an empty seat in the bullding,

The new edition of “The Nabobs” is
one of the most eeintillating musical
comedies geen here this season, and in
the hands of a very clever company it
receives a perfectly adequate representa

The dialogue is witty, the music bright
and tuneful, and the specialties, which
occur in the second act, are exceptionally
clever. The whole company works inde
fatigably, and the result is a brisk and

Sald Thirty-One Fine Hogs.


Major B. W. Lynn, Superintendent of
the Penitentiary, yesterday sold to Heck
ler Brothers, of this city, thirty-one fine
hoge from the State farm at 41-2 cents
per pound gross, The hogs were dn
superb condition, weighing an average of
250 pounds each. They were splendid
samples of the farm's products.

(Special.)—Yesterday afternoon Macy
Crowe, son of Mr, John Crowe, of Din
widdie county, accidentally shot and
fatally wounded James Sallade, a col
ored bov. James had been long em
ployed in Mr, Crowe's family as house
boy, and was out with Macey Crowe
shooting a rifle. The white youth asked
the colored boy to throw up his cap, but
instead of hitting the cap the ball en
tered the forehead of the colored boy,
and early this morning he died. The acci
dent is deeply regretted.

cil held this evening resulted in the

fine dwelling on his farm, near the vil

Mr. Simon Edwards, of Nomini Grove,
Westmoreland county, whose residence
was recently destroyed by fire, has just
completed a new residence on the old site,

purchased of Mr. Isaac 8. Jeffries his
dwelling. and store-house at Ethel, this
county.
A large number of oyster-dredgers have
passed through this place during the past
week, tramping their way to Fredericks
burg, in hope of reaching their respective
homes from that point. They report ill
treatment at the hands of the vessel cap

Mr. John R. Dos Passos, a millionaire,
of New York city, who owns a large es
tate at Sandy Point, in Westmoreland

NORFOLK, VA., December 1.—(Special.)
Mr. J. Cary Weston, an old resident and
one of the best-known citizens of Nor
folk, died here to-day in the 73d year ol
his age. He was born in this county ot
wealthy parents, and since the early
fifties had been engaged in business in
this city, where he had extensive invest
ments. His estate ia valued at about $200,
000. He was married when a young man
to Miss Jane, sister of Commodore Mar
shall Parks. She bore him one son, who
died when very young. His first wife died
soon after, and he then married Miss
Nannie Mallory, of this city, who, with
one son, survives him. Mr, Weston had
been in poor health for a number of years,
and latterly left home only on fine days
to ride or take a short walk. He was
man of the highest reputation for honesty
and fair dealing, but was of a very re
tiring disposition, and while his ac
quaintance was not wide, he had a few
warm friends, of whom he was very fond.
The Board of Stewards of Queen-Street
Methodist Episcopal Church has increased
the salary of the pastor, Rev. J. W.

now with Dr. Daniel Stinson, of 11 west
Seventeenth street, preparatory to his re
turn to the West, Professor Elljott, with €C,
R. Akely, the head taxidermist of the mu
seum, left the United States on March
ith last, The object of the expedition
was to collect specimens of large mam
mals, Professor Elliott told a Sun reporter
vesterday that he had informed the di
rectors that the animals of the kind of
which they needed specimens were fast
becaming extinct, even in Africa, and
that unless the expedition was under
taken promptly it might be impossible to
collect examples of the mammals which
the museum desired, Professor Elliott said
that hig expedition had been even more
successful than he had anticipated. A
large number of the skins were shipped
directly from Aden to this country Oec
tober 20th, and they are believed to be in
Chicago already.
“We left Berbera in April,” Professor
EENiott said, “after having stopped at Aden
to make arrangements for the comple
tion of our outfit, We were compelled to
carry every thisg i us, and one of the
chief burdens w#®s the water we were
forced to take along, We travelled with
a caravan of ninety camels and seventy
men. We were alk armed with rifles, Mr,
Akely, an Englishman named Dodson,
and myself were the only white men in
the party. We had the satisfaction of
having shot ourselves every specimen
that was brought back. We travelled in
all about 1,000 miles, and went 300 miles
into the interior. We made three expe
ditions from the coast, which we reached
in April. The first was eastward from
Berbera over the range of the Golis to
the Gobari plain, where we encamped
for three weeks, We then went south
from Berbera through Jerato pass of the
Golis range to the Toyo plain to get a
specimen of the hartsbeest, and a rare
kina of antelope which has nearly be
come extinet, Our last trip lasted over

not been that we made the expedition in
the rainy season we could never have
stood it as well as we did, We were able
to get some water in that way, but were
compellad to rely in the main on the wa
ter that we carried with us. It was the
same way with the food. The natives
grew nothing. The only meat they eat
is that of the diseased sheep or camels
which are killed when they are about to
die. We could occasionally get a sheep
from the natives, and we shot some game,
It all tasted the same, The antelope meat
was like tasteless leather, and the birds
were even worse, There is no fat on any
of the animals, They exist practically
without water, The birds were most
abundant there, and we Killed guinea
hens, doves, Frankling, and nearly every
kind of bird, If 1 had gone there with
the necessary facilities for keeping the
sking of the birds I could have brought
back the finest collection of birds in the
world, As it was, I brought back about
300.
The rarest specimen I got was a Dalra
antelope, which has not only become very
rare, but is extremely difficult to shoot, It
is a small animal, and very agile, 1 got
a most complete collection of mammals,
and brought back not only an example of
avers kind, but specimens of them at all
ages. They will be mounted together in
groups, surrounded by the plants and
rocks of the region in which they were
caught. The museum will have the most
complete collection sf large mammals in
che world, We were able to hunt only
for a few hours every day, We started
at daybreak, and were compelled to stop
by 10 o'clock in the forenoon, as the heat
was too intense by that time to continue
in the sun. We then attended to the
skinning of the animals we had killed, and
if the heat was not too intense we would
hunt again in the late afternoon, but it
was rarely possible to do that,

“The regions we visited were almost un
known to white men, and we encountered
the natives constantly, We were not mo
destad, The native tribes were at war
with one another, and too jealous to unite,
even to attack strangers, Besides that,
we were armed with rifles. We were only
seventy men, but they had only spears.
The Orgadan tribes, who have never al
lowed a white man to enter their villages,
were not friendly when we encountered
then, but they did not attack us, We
were supplied with beads and calico to
trade with the natives, One tribe of the
Midgens were devastating the country
around us, and they were armed with pol
soned arrows, but they left us alone. The
Abyssinians, who were raiding the country
through which we travelled, kept ahead
of ug, and we were fortunate enough not
to meet them. Some of the natives who
had suffered from their atrocities fol
lowed our caravan for protection. We had
with us Duella ldres, who had travelled
in Alriea with Stanley for eight years,
and other interpreters we knew the Galla
tongue, Our force was nothing compared
to the numbers of natives we met, but
they respected our guns, A

“The animals of Africa are rapidly be
coming extinet, and within a short time
there will be none of them lefi, The
rinderpest swept southward over the eoun
try three years ago, and that destroyed a
great many, particularly in the South, The
natives kill a great many, too, but the
chief causes of their rapid disappearance
are the hunters who go there in search of
big game. Merely for the sake of getting
a larger pair of horns than some other
fellow did, the animals are recklessly
killed in large numbers. [Formerly in the
South there were great herds of antelope
that have now been destroyed. The ele
phiants have almost become extinet in that

PETERSBURG, VA., December 1.—(8pe
clal.)—Several men were more or less in
jured by the explosion of a licorice-boiler
at the tobacco-factory of Messrs, William
Cameron Brother, on Perry street, this
morning—two of them very painfully. The
licorice-bollers are located in the north
end of the fourth floor of the factory, and
are about 6 feet In circumference and 2
feet in diameter. In these vessels the
licorice is boiled by means of steam-pipes,
They are supposed to stand a pressure of
20 pounds, though the one that exploded
this morning is said not to have had a
pressure of over 185 pounds, What caused
the explosion is not known,

There were a number of men at work
near the boiler when the explosion occur
red, and most of these suffered, The boil.
ing licorice was scattered in all directions,
and stuck wherever it fell
THE INJURED,
Mr. William Burton was severely scald
ed about the head, face, and hand, His
injuries were such that the physician, who
was immediately called to attend him, di
rected that Mrs. Burton should be sum
moned to his side, He was subsequently
sent to his home, on Commerce street, His
sufferings were very great, Mr, Burton's
parents live in Chesterfield county,
James Jones (colored) was also badly
‘burned by scalding licorice about the face
and hands, and was sent home, The other
persons injured to a less extent were
Thomas Epps, Henry Walker, Alexander
Harris, and one or two others, all colored,
whose burns are painful but not serious,
They were all properly cared for,
The boiler was blowy through a window,
carrying with it the window-frame and a
portion of the brickwork. The mass fell
and almost buried itself in the yard of
St. Stephen’s church, near by.
Had the boiler been blown in the oppo
gite direction it ig probable that a number
of people would have been killed and in
jured,
CASE CONTINUED,
Joseph Rutherford, who was brought
over from Richmond last evening, was be
fore the Mayor's Court this morning on
the charge of embezzling funds belonging
to the Chicago Picture Company, He was
represented by Lawyer Gordon, of Rich
mond, who urged the discharge of the
accused, In the absence of witnesses,
however, the Mayor decided to continue
the case until the 9th instant, and Ruther
ford was committed until that day.
ACQUITTED OF A SERIOUS CHARGE.
Charles Washington (colored), who has
been in jail for some time awaiting trial
for arson, was to-day tried and acquitted
in the Hustings Court. He was charged
with trying to burn a house belonging to
Mr. A. A. Traylor, on Bank street, ocecu
pied by the family of William Love (color
ed).

The number of arrests made by the po
lice during the month of November was
208, Of these 24 were for assault and bat
tery, 6 for felony, and 13 for larceny, The
others were for more trivial offences,
Cornellus Hewin (colored) appealed from
the Mayor's decision this morning, =en
tencing him to sixty days in fail on two
charges of larceny of goods from his em
plover,
Mr, Joseph V, Perkinson, a well-known
contractor, will wad to-morrow afternoon
Miss Mattie Howlett, The marriage will
take place ar the bride's residence, on

The 53-year-old daughter of Isaiah Davis
(colored), on Rock street, was badly burns
ed this afternoon. Her clothes caught fire
from matches, with which she was play
ing.

ner, he affordel them such assistance of
consolation as his skill or sympathy
prescribed, and waxed rich and popular
as his fame expanded. With the devel

tivated a pleasing taste for those pre
cious relies of antiquity, in which mil

He had in his library a collection of
costly objects of art—invaluable coins,
rare jewels, costly statuettes, inimitable
trifles chased by the chisels of great ar
tisans of antiguity., The fame of his
treasures was loud in the world’s ears,
with the note of his skill, and among
collections his was as great a name to
conjure with as among alienists,
One day there came to the residence
of Dr. A. an American gentleman of
dignified address and that portliness of
mien which is presumed to refiect lofty
position and weaith. Admitted to the
great man's office, the visitor introduces
himself as a banker, who had come all
the way from Chicago to consult him
about the condition of his wife, At con
siderable length he explained her miss
fortune—she was a Kleptomaniac, His
life was a burden to him, following her
from store to store, continually guarding
her reputation against the encroachments
of her fingers. Though it had cost him
thousands, his wife knew nothing, sus
pected nothing of her own weakness.
Nor should she ever Know If he could
prevent it. To consult Dr. A. they had
come thousands of miles, and on his skill
and learning the hopes of the husband®
were pinned. The great physician asked
a few questions, and expressed deep in
terest in the case, and demanded that the
patient be brought to him.
“But she has no idea of all this,” ex
claimed the husband, passionately. “ifs
have brought her to consult you as a
physician 1 fear ghe would suspect some
thing and it would kill her. If you wil
permit it I'll take her to call on you as a
collector of antiquities. She is deeply In
‘terested in ancient jewelry, and the 0s
tensible object of our visit will be to dis
cuss archaeological remains. Do not be
disconcerted, however, if during the In
terview vou find her pilfering, slipping
your relics and coins into her umbrella

course, whatever she takes will be re

geriptions, a bracelet of gold curiously
wrought and inscribed, a silver statuette

graceful learning. Every now and then
the lady slipped into her pocket or drop
ped into her parasol a coin, a jewel, a
vase, and as she did so her husband
winked at Dr. A. to draw attention to her
theft. When the physician finally gave
the signal that he had learned all he re
quired, she had accumulated the rarest of
his possessions and yet prepared to de
part with an inimitable assurance of man

“1'I1 be back within an hour,” sald the
Chicago banker, “with those things my
wife has taken, Poor, poor, girl!” he
burst out. ‘Doctor, my fortune, my lite
are yours if you can but cure her.” He
fled after his spouse, handkerchief in

gun to be introduced at public meetings.
Men have gone about talking of a spirited
foreign policy that would teach Germany
her place, There has seemed to be some
thing stirring in the air that spoke ot
imperial enterprise, Even the Poet Lau
reate was moved to compete with the
music-halls in this national uprising. And
the result of it all was seen on Trafalgar
Day, when Nelson's Column was waeathed
with flowers and Trafalgar Square filled
with a cheering crowd. Another result
was seen at a meeting of the Imperial
Institute, summoned to listen to a lecture
by a Mr. Draper on the geology of South
Africa. Mr. Draper was supposed 10
have helped the Transvaal Republic in
its defeat of Dr. Jameson's raid, and the
members of the Imperial Institute gave
him a warm reception, Traitor, renegade,
cur, and liar, were what they mostly
called him, Considering the social stand
ing of the members, the scene was almost
as remarkable as that famous night,
some twenty years ago, when Sir Charles
Dilke, rising in the House of Commons
to propose an inquiry into the expenses
of the Crown, was howled at and hissed
