One of the literary treats of the season
was the lecture of Professor Edmund Har
rison at Richmond College Tuesday might.
The high reputation of Professor Harri
son as a Latin scholar attracted one of the
largest and most ealtivated audiences that
has vet attended the course of lectures now
being delivered by the faculty of the col.
lege. His theme was “The Forum the
Heart of Rome.” His graphic desertption
of this throbbing centre of influence and
power, intensified by the real pictures
which he threw upon the screen by means
of =a inl magic-lantern, made
his hearers feel that they were living
in the Imperial City looking on its
magnificent temples, listening to the
senators who framed its laws, to the
poets who sang its victories, and to the
orators and philosophers who perpetuated
its influence, Mr. Harrison is a graduate
of the University of Virginia and heen
for more than a quarter of a century a
teacher of Latin. The chaste and beaati
ful language in which he elothed his
thoughts his comprehensive and accurate
knowledge of Roman men and manners,
laws aud literature, the influence of that
mighty empire on modern civilization, and
the happy Bits which in the elucidation of
his theme he made at present society, poli
ticians, and public men demonstrate that
hie is one of the most accomplished scholars
in the South and every way worthy of the
high position which he has for so many
