In to-day's issue of Russell Harrison's paper
another inspired editorial is printed, which
says in part: This is an American administra.
tion. It is intended forthe advancement, de
velopment and protection of American in.
terests. President Harrison entrusted the
State portfolio to one of the keenest
and most popular of American statesmen.
There was thus at the outset of the
administration a combination of (WO power.
ful intellects the one impetuons, vigorous,
alert and strategic. the other calm, patient,
thoughttul wy discerning. While the elo
quent voice of Mr. Blaine has been heard in
favor of reciprocity. it was the masterly jude
ment of the President himself that led to the
formulation of the act of Congress giving him
the power to secure reciprocal trade relations.

It was the President himself who dictated
the prompt and powerful letter to the Gov
srnor of Louisiana, protesting against the
New Orleans outbreak.
It was President Harrison who earnestly
and courageonsly espoused the canse of pro
tection and hastened the passage of the Me
Kinley bill.
Though there has been no beating of gongs
to attract attention he has been the inspiring
leader of his party.
Complaint against the President comes only
from two classes first, the many embraced
among his political opponents, who oppose
the policy of his party and himself; secondly,
the few always to be found inthe ranks of
the party in power who, with or without rea.
son, are dissatisfied with the distribution of
its political patronage.

The sub-committee on tariff of the United
States Senate are holding a meeting at the
Fifth-avenue Hotei—Senator Aldrich of
Rhode Island, Senator Carlisle of Kentucky,
and Senator Hiscock of New York, Heard
Carroll W. Wright, head of the Bureau of
Statistics at Washington and Colanel Grosv
enor of this city. The meeting is of the
pature of a conference.
The shipments of gold coin to-day were
very heavy—namely, #2,760,000 for London.
The total amount shipped so far this week 1s
$3,450,000,

Among the passengers sailing were Mrs.
Levi P. Morton, wife of the Vice-President,
and Miss Morton: Mrs. Don Cameron, wife of
the Peunsylvania Senator, and Miss Cameron,

several months in Europe, and will

NEW YORK’S NUISANCE.
A stranger landing in New York at the pres
sent time would think an earthquake had
struck the city from the appearance of its
streets. The principal thoroughfures front
the Battery to Central Park are in a state of
upheaval never before known in the history of
the metropolis. The condition of the streets
and the prospective continuance of this

to make people vacate the premises for the

FLAG OF A SPANISH VESSEL.
For the first time in many years the flag of
a Spanish naval vessel was seen yesterday in
New York harbor. The vessel which carried
it was the Nautilus, a heavily sparred, full
rigged corvette of 1,640 tons displacement,
under the command of Captain Palos. The
Nautilus is being used by the Spanish Gov
ernment as a training ship. She will remain
here about a month. During that time her
officers and some of the crew will visit West
Point, the navy.yard, Niagara Falls, Auna
polis and other points of interest. I'he board
of aldermen have passed a resolution grant.
