The Gazette of the 2Gth May, contains
the following decree
“Don Joaquin Anduaoa, Munster
Plenipotentiary of His Majesty in the II.
States of America, having deserted his
post, and joined the enemies of hi» coun
try, his Majesty has resolved to strip him
forthwith of his honors and dist inctions,
and has decreed, that, in case of being ta
ken, he shall be judged according to the
Ians.”
Qh the 22d and 24th May, <hc Cortes
were occupied for some time with the case
of General O’Donuvl, Count, del Ahisbal.
llis conduct was described, by various
speakers as atrocious treachery an out
rage upon the national cause; a violation
of the civil as well as the military laws, &c.
The committee to whom the caso was re
ferred, reported that he should he tried,
and the proposition was unanimously
adopted. A quotation from the speech of
tiie principal orator, who proposed the re
ference, will make, known the feeling of.

The horrible treason of Count del
Ahisbal, will only contribute to the greater
glory and energy of our country. We
haye now the key of the secret of the im- J
prudent-march of the foreign army to Ma-
ibid. That army which has dared to pen-
1 wlrate to the capital, will soon experience
the consequences of its temerity it w ill
are whai credit is to be given to the pro
raises of traitors who offer it advantages
so great. It will find that, in the end, the
mass of the Spanish nation will understand 1
their true interests, and unite in that senti
ment. which has always characterized the I
Spanish people—hatred of foreign cue-
nties. Blood, indeed, will flow, which has
not before been spilt; but let it he. upon
the heads of the miscreants who have dis
turbed the pacific and majestic current of
tiie Revolution, and converted it into an
overwhelming torrent.”
“As to Ahisbal, who has crowned did
acts of perfidy with this new one, it is just
that the. Cortes of Spain should bring down j
upon him the whole weight of responsibil
ity and tell ir.e not, gentlemen, that he
can elude it since this declaration of our
views, the rigor which we would exercise,
out unanimity in present circumstances, in
declaring his guilt, will place our proceed
ings in advantageous contrast with that old
tiie Despotic government, w hich ruled us j
heretofore. Tile despotism strong in ap-
pearance, but weak in reality, when it saw
an act of treason on tire part of this gene-
ral—what did it do? Caressed and prais-
sd him; bestowed upon him new honors,
crosses, ice. How different will be our
course At the crisis in which w e are 1
in tin1 inidst of dangers—w e shall vote his
responsibility we shall not spare his head,
if lie should he found to deserve death—or
we shall decree bis prescription, ind cause
him to hear the infamy of merited punish
ment, even in the files of the foreigners,
among whom he will endeavour to hide his
miserable existence.”
The leading orators in the Cortes, after
tiie defection of Ahisbal and the occupa
tion of Madrid by tiie French, announced,
in eloquent speeches, their resolution to
perish^ or live, in perpetual exile, rather
hian submit to French dictation and in
tins language they seem to have been se
conded by the whole body. The Gazette
°f the 1st June gives, officially, a circular
fr'un the government at Seville, to its d<
pKunntic agents in foreign countries, dated
*c 27(A of May, in w hich the strongest
invectives are uttered against the whole
•onduct of the French Cabinet, and of
whiirit the ensuing passage w ill suffice to
•hew the spirit and tone.
“The Spanish government, pledged in

only her cause, but the cause of mankind,

Would he false to its most sacred duties, if,

lemnly protest, in the face of the world, a
gmnst the monstrous pretension of one
power’s right to interfere in the domestic
concerns of another, set up and acted up- 1
on by tlie cabinet of the Tlioillcries. It
protest* against the establishment of an

negotiation.
There is a decree of the Cortes, which
ni.ikps a difference of one-fillh of the mi
port duties payable at Havana, in favor of
Matnncas. Trinidad, and otfier regular
ports of entry in the Island of Cuba. But,
in easr; the foreign merchandise lawfully
introduced into those porta, slwukl In* sent
to Havana and Cuba, they arc to pay there,
the fifth part remitted at the others. The
privilege is limited to a term of ten years,
and the object of it is s od to he the ad
vancement of the agriculture and poouhi
I tiou of the island.
HosTfov, July £4.—4.’apt. Bancroft, who
arrived here ycstenlay in ;j}> d.iys from
Amsterdam, states, that about live days
previous to his sailing, news arrived there,
that the Spanish army bad compelled the
I reach to evacuate Madrid.

THE GltEI'.KS.
The following interesting letter has been
addressed by Lord Byron to the commil
luejn London, for devising; ways, and pro*
cniing means for aiding the Greek cause.
No man in Europe, probably, better knows
the real situation and wants of this people
than Kaord B., who with all his faults, is an
enthusiastic lover of freedom:
1 hv. principal materiel wanted by the
Greeks appears to he, first, a park uf field
artillery, light, and fit for mountain service;
secondly, gunpowder; thirdly, hospital or
medical stores. The readiest mode of leans
mission is, hem, by Idra,addressed to Mr.
Ncgi'is, the Minister. I meant to send a cer
tain quantity oflhetwolatter—nogreat deal,
j hut enough for an individual to shew his
good wishes for ;he Greek success, butain
pausing, because, in case I should go my
self, I can take them with me. I do not
mean to limit my own contribution to
this moiely, hut more especially if I can
got to Greece myself, I shall devote what
ever resources I can muster, of my own, to
advancing the great object. 1 am in cor
respondence with Signor-(well known
to Mr. tlohhouse,) who is now at-,
hut his latest advice merely states, that the
Greeks arc at present employed organizing
their internal government, and the details
ol its administration this would seem to
intimate security hut the war is however,
far from being terminated. The Turks
are an obstinate race, as all former wars
have proved them, even if beaten, as it is
to he hoped they will he. But in no ease
can the labours of the committee be said to
lie in vain, for in the event even of the
Greeks being subdued and dispersed, the
funds, which would he employod in suc
couring and gathering together the remnant
so as to alleviate in part their distresses,
and enable them to find or make a country
(as so many emigrants of other nations
have been compelled to do,) would bless
both those who give and those who take,”
as the bounty both of justice and mercy.—
With regard to the formation of a brigade
(which Mr. Hohhousc hints at iri his short
letter-of this day’s receipt, inclosing the
one to which I have the honor to reply,)
I would presume to suggest, but merely as
an opinion resulting rather from the melan
choly experience ol the brigades embarked
in the Colombian service than from any
experiment yet fairly tried in Greece, that
the attention of the committee had better,
perhaps, he directed, to the employment of
officers of experience than the eic olment
of raw British soldiers which latter are
apt to be unruly, and not very sprv iccnble in
irrregular warfare, by the side of foreigners.
A small body of good officers, especially
artillery or engineers, with a quantity (such
as the committee might deem necessary)
of stores, of the nature which (Japt.-
intimated as most wanted, would, I should
conceive, be a highly useful accession.—
Officers who had previously served in tile
Mediterranean would be preferable, as j
some knowledge of station is nearly iudis-1
pcnsahle. It would be as well that they
should be aware that they ju'c not going 1
to rough it on a beef stake and a bottle
of port but that Greece never, of
late years, very plentifully stocked, for a
mess, is at present the country of all kinds
ofprivatioi). This remark may seem super
fluous but I have been led to it, by ob
serving that many foreign officers, Italian,
French, and some German, (but very few
ol the latter,) have returned in disgust; im
agining either to enjoy full pay, speedy
promotion, and a very moderate deg ee of
duty; they complain too, of having been ill
received by the government or inhabitants
hut numbers of these adventurers, were i
attracted by a hope of command and plun- j
dcr, and disappointed of both those;
Greeks that 1 have seen strenuously deny
the charge of inhospitality, and declare!
that they shared their pittance to the last j
crumb with their foreign volunteers.

relations with England in consequence,
because 1 feel persuaded that the first ob
ject of the committee is the emancipation

sion for every kind of speculation—they
need not cross the American seas, for one
much better worth their w hile is nearer
home. The resources even for an emi
grant population, in the Greeklslandsalone
are rarely to hr parallelled and the cheap
ness of every kind of not only necessary,
but luxury, (that is to say, luxury of na
ture,) fruits, wine, oil, tic. in a state of
peace,are far beyond those of the Cape and
Van Demon's Lam], and the other places
of refuge which the English population are
searching fur over the waters.”

at Mojim, about seven leaguese distant,
with the main army of the llny;|lists.—
Only 150 men were left in the gitmson,
and tlrese held out until evening, svben the
Colombians entered—the inhabitants- and
troops retiring to a place called Vigia, ttvo
mill's hack.
At the v 151a, tlic RoyMisU met
tiy four companies otihe regiment of (Jas
sadures del General, who, being joined by
the men who retired from Marncavho,
were gallantly led against their invaders
by their commandant Prieto, ant at the
point <il the bayonet entered the town at
0 o’clock P. M. They found the Colom
bians in (In* greatest confusion, nivj killed
and wmmded upwards of JOO of them.—
Coininaudant Prieto was badly wounded in
the affair, which so disheartened li* men
that they retired with the loss of M kilted.
INieto died, that night. On the tt)t\i the
General (Morales) arrived at Pul'UMtoojo,
with the main Imdy of the army, and on
the 17th, having been joined by two other
divisions, entered Manicayho without re
sistance, the Colombians having retired to
their vessels, which afterwards Came to
anchor just out of gun shot.
During the absence of the Royalists, die
town had been greatly injured. Many of
the best buildings had been burnt, and the
houses completely sacked!

“A conspiracy againt the present go
vernment has just been discovered, an|
several of the leaders 'have boon arrested
among them several officers. Their ob
ject was to banish all foreigners, and par
ticularly the old Spaniards, including se
veral members of Congress. It is fortu
nate that the present head of the police is
a man of strong mind and great energy.—.
It is owing to his exertions that the attempt
for this time was defeated. The present
government being only provisional, many
of the provinces w’ish lo preserve their lo
cal independence, and only to surrender
enough of it to form a Union, similar to
that of the United States. The present
government is not a solid one though the
executive officers, the chief* of the army,
and the congress in general, seem Well dis
posed. JSut money, that all powerful en
gine, is very scarce. It is yet uncertain
how things will settle down. Thinking
men on the spot can make no calculation.”
Military Family of the Duke de Dordeaux.
The Duke of Bordeaux is, we believe,
now in his third year. We learn from the
last almanack Royal that this last hope of
the French people has a military family,
composed of four gentlemen of honor, five
aids de camp and a colonel d'etat major.—
His highness has also attached to his per
son, for civil mid diplomatic uses, a secreta
ry of the chamber, a secretary etu cabinet,
and a secretary ties rommandemena the
last of whom we learn from the same
source, resides in the United States.

BRUTAL OUTRAGE.
A gentleman of unquestionable veracity,
(says the Milledgeville Recorder,) writes
to us front Pulaski county, that a few In
dians having encamped, two or three
weeks ago, in a neighbouring county for
the purpose of supplying themselves with
venison, a parcel of white men went to
then camp, (the Indians being absent on
a hunting excursion) and took their blan
kets, clothes, saddle*, bridles, provisions
and skins, and made a bonfire of the whole
Tile Indians were entirely peaceable, had
done no mischief, and were furnished with
recommendations from McIntosh and
Barnette, soliciting for them friendly treat
ment. Rut It was the misfortune of these
children of the forest to meet with savages
worse than Indians. Our correspondent
is apprehensive that some innocent person
will suffer for this abominable act, so con
trary to hospitality, justice and humanity,
and appropriately remarks. Had those
we call sit'ages committed a similar out
rage on our unnfTctrding citizens who had
business in, or were passing thro’ the Na
tion, what an uproar and bustle it would
make We should hear of nothing but
revengenfe and restitution.”
Health of the city.—It affords us grout
pleasure to state, that New York was never
mure healthy than at this time. There, is
not a single ease, of malignant fe.ver either
in the city, or at the quarantine fc as the
Season is now far advanced, the weather
remains remarkably coni and pleasant, we
may confidently hope to escape the visita
tation of pestilential diseases. Those w ho
"are intent on busint s or pleasure,w ill fine the
city as healthy and pleasant as it is in May.
This will lie agreeable intelligence to those
who are out ol town, and who watch with
anxiety the approach of the sickly season.
Every physician with whom we nave con
versed, is of the opinion, that there is no
probability of the appearance of malignant
fever this year.
