It gives us the greatest satisf'.u-ti <n to no
Bonnes that the Capkal of Ihe .Southern Con
federacy is to be removed to Richmond. A
more admirable leeatioa could not be found.
Its beautiful and commanding position, its fa
cilities; for ready communication with all i.irts
of tho South, its healthful climate, and its ob
vious advantages iv a military point of via-w,
commend the soundness of the selection which
has been made.
Nature; seems to hove designed Richmond
for the centra! seat of a great empire. Its ad
vantages for ooinmortis! and manufacturing
groatness are unrivaled on this continent. As
the Capital of the "Old Dominion, it has claims
which will appeal to multitudes of 6outhem
hearts. Virginia may BOt have been first in
the prcfent Southern movement, but she was
first in the great movement which established
the liberties and independence of America, and
she is behind BO other ia maintaining a position
whiih she has once assumed. If a majority of
Union mon was at one time found in her bor
ders, it is no less true that, when the real pur
poses of Lisi oln were mode known to Vir
ginia, that majority, with exceptions so few
and contotnptible that they do not dosery; te
be noticed, threw themselves at once in sblid
mass into lbs front rank of resistance, when
they may now be found, as every camp will
testify aud this day's ota will prove, as in
trepid and v.3 loyal friends of Southern inde
pendence as gallant South Carolina ever was

We shall welcome with great pleasure the
arrival iv Richmond of that eminent body of
statesmen and soldiers who eompoee the Mont
gomery tJovcruuK-iit. The I'resident, .JuiTKlt-
SON DaLYIS, is a tower of strength in himself. He
has the iron will of Aniiri.iv Jackson, all of
Jackson's nerve, energy and decision, and
even more than bis military knowledge and
general education. Indeed, apart from his
great qualities as a commander, he is a states
man in every way qualified to guide the helm
of the ship of state iv the wildest storm (hat
ever swept tho ocean. He has net only great
foresight, judgment and fertility of resources,
but a wonderful composure of Fpirit, keeping
naif poised and self possessed in the mos. agi
tating moments: and there is about ti.o man
evident in every lino of tbe firm aud l.,f;y
countenance, an elevation of ion] welch at
tests him a gentleman, and commands univer
sal respect and coniidenee. A brilliant civic
aad military staff will probably accompany
the President, including, perhaps, the famous
Urai reoard, who, we understand, will soon

tions la Virginia. Our city, therefore, bids
fair to become, before long, a scene of stirring
interest, worthy of inaugurating tho uuigniii

of providing some useful employment for the
leisure hours of soldiers in our neighborhood,
hat procured, and had removed to "Camp
Lkk," one sf tho larga tents belonging to the
city, where a reading room will be established
for the free BM of all the meu who choose to
avail themselves of it He has already col
lected a little library, which he is anxious to
increase to a large oue. We hope he will be
universally sustained iv this praiseworthy en
terprise by our citizens. Iv every family there
are a few bonks and magazines, new and old.

which is moral, instructive,and entertaining—

The N. Y. Journal of Commerce ban an ar
ticle on this subject in which it endeavors to
correct the absurd idea prevalent in the North,
to send a swarm of soldiers sufficiently
numerous to overrun the seceded .States in a
brief space of time, and thus close the war in
one btilliaiit campaign." It concludes, thus:
"Upon no basis either of precedent or of ex
isting facts, can we see hope of anything leas
than a prolonged and disastrous v.'ar, if the
military firm alone Is to be retted upon to settle
our dilii.Millies. It is easy to say that lhe
South must be reduced to obedience that re
hellion must be crushed, and the power and
authority of tbe Government asserted without,
delay. If the States vi rebellion would down
at the bidding of the Federal Uoreram-nt,
and would stay quiet after yielding to a su

Hut it must be, remembered that we have to

Suspicious Persons.—A perso'- repretenting
himself to bs a telegrapbie operator from
Washiugtou, called 11. W. Bernard, alias
amp, anas any other name that he sees fit to
MSume, underwent yesterday before the Mayor
a put till examination for being a person of
suspicious character. The party made a
l'tigthy statement, from which it sppeared
that by come means he had wormed himself
into the eonfidenee of influential parties here,
and bail been entrusted with sundry important
uuilertrikings, which ho had succeeded in car
rying out in a vory dubious manner. Prisoner
is the name party who was dispatched to lowa
after one of John Brown's men, and who made
such a bungle ef the busine-?. Some of his
exploits iv that capacity were commented on
by the lowa papers in no very complimentary
way. He told the Mayor that his ability as a
letegraahie operator enabled him. with very
»mall trouble, while passing any telegraph
wire, ta ascend and affix an apparatus by
which lie could find out what was going over
the line. The Mayor thereupon concluded
that he was a dangerous personage. Prisoner
denied the inference, and wi-hed to genii for
various persons in authority,who would vouch
for his status. The .Secretary of the Common
wealth appeared as a witness against him.
Tba ease was continued, and party sent to
jail.
Antonio CuatiMoii, a "vagrant from Wash
ington, D. C, and a suspicious person," was
ciinu-ilted without examination till the 27th
inst.
John B. Vorheos, on whose j erson was found

gliphics, was brought bsfere tho Mayor, and
arraigned, but not released, oe satisfactory
explanation of his business hero ever having
ben given.
Convicted of Forgery.— James E. Carter waj
put en trial before Judge Lyons yesterday for
.urging the name oi Lawrence S. Maryo on
Alex. HtH, for a pair of boot*. The accused
plead not guiity. After hearing the testimony,
the jury retired end brought in a verdict of
guilty, *sse*stag his term of imprisonment at
tun years.
The trial of another cn.se against Carter wai
then proceeded with. In the second case be
was charged with forging the name, of A. W.
Th-.mas ten check. On this he wa* found
guilty, and awarded the same measure of puu
ishment as in the first case. A motion sub
mitted by him l'ur a new trial was overruled
bj the Court.
Miui.—Un the trial of the above eases, tbe
prisoner introduced Charles .Smith (who it
awaiting trial 0:1 sundry charges of forgery)

to answer positively, when Carter flew in a

commotion in the Court-room.
Pardoned. —Two slaves, named Jack .and
Ben, owned bj 1". N. Fitxhngh,oi Caroline co.,
who were condemned to be sold and transport
ed beyond the limits of the "Jotted States about
two years tince, by the County Court of Car
uline, for setting lire t'i a barn, were pardoned
by the Goeernor on the 21st, ami restored to
tiie agent of their oivner. The pardon was
granted in pursuance of an aft of Assembly
passed at the last session. Thn circumstances
attending the case were, in brief, as follows:
On the arrest of the negroes their owner sud
denly disappeared. It appeared <>n their trial
that they were incited to the commission of
the offence by him. After condemnation an
onle.r was given by FiUbugh f"r the payment
to an tigent of the amount of the assessed
value of the negroes. The Auditor of Public
Accounts refused to honor the draft, a law
hitting been passed to meet such cases many
years since. If the judgment of the Court
had boon allowed to stand, the State would
have gotten the two slaves for nothing, which
the General Assembly did not think was ex
actly io accordance with justice, BO they au
thorized the Coventor to release thiui. Fits

First Regiment N. 0. Volnnteer* —Seven
hundred men. ihe balance of the First Legi
uietit North Carolina Volunteers, pari oi which
bat been encamped for several days at How
ard*! Qrove, arrived in Richmond via Peters
burg Railroad, at 11 o'clock Tuesday night,
and proceeded immediately t<> camp. The
Smith need not wish to have a better armed
or tne-re determined set of men than those
from the Old North State. The following is it

Buckingham county, via Danville Railroad.
The men were without uniforms or anus, but
the former is being fabricated, and the latter
they will get iv Richmond. All the men ex
prees a deajpe to hate the best arms that can
be obtained, as they want to inflict all the
damage possible on tho eoborts of Old Abe
when brought in content 'with the molly

The Purr, 11 Buttery, —This is the name cho
sen by one of the first companies who went
into serrice from this city. It owned its ex
istence to tbe active exertion of Daniel ilag
erty, wh.i on the inception of hostilities, gath
ered together a band ol choice spirit- ready to
peril their life in defence of our threatened
rights. They have been stationed for several
we. ks past in the vicinity of Fredericksburg.
Sb"uld the enemy conclude to land at Acquis
Creek, they are the very boys to meet him
and rebuke his presumption in a most eSse
tirs and convincing way. The ntimpany is
armed with the deadly Parrot: rifled cannon,
which they know how to handle.

From the South. Intelligence was received
jesterday by telegraph from H-m. Waller K.
Staples, one of the Virginia Cnmmissioßcni to
1 the Confederate Congress, of the aJjourument
of that body, and its purpose to re-assemble at
Richmond at no distaut day. It is needless
ti say that the last item of intelligence was
received by persons of all classes aud condi
tions in life with unalloyed pleasure, and that
the expression of satisfaction at the. determi
nation of the agents of the Southern States in
thi- regard was not only hearty, but univer
sal. No doubt (ten. i»av it will be here at an
early day, and then our people will be afforded
an opportunity of paying him the respect
tiny feel aud which is so eminently his due.
Admitted a Citizen. —Mr. John Lindsey, the
well known butcher, who is a native of Met
ric England," aud who has been a resident of
this city for 27 years past, was j'esterday ad
mitted a citizen of the sovereign State of
Virginia by the Hustings Court, Judge Lyons
presiding. He is the first gent..man who has
been naturalized" before the above Court
since tbe passage, of the Secession Ordinance.

certainly afforded about as many indubitable

of tbe Old Dominion, as auy gentleman with
whom we are acquainted.
Damaged.* The late heavy raits made some
breaches iv tbe walls and culverts in some
portions of our city, vu: in a massive wall iv
bloody Kirn, the rtoue arch over Shuekoe
Creek, on Union street, and the culvert in
course of construction on Maiu and Monroe
streets. The Utter has been repaired, and we
learn that arrangement* axe in course of pre
paration lor the former.

tist Colportnge has sent out an appeal for

weeks, hare 150.000 soldiers in Virginia.—

Central Guards. —Tbe Prince Edward coun
ty Central Guards, commanded by Csptniu
Hughes, and numbering oi rank and file, ar
rived in our city yesterday via Danville Kail
road, and were mustered iuti service during

of Instruction, at tbe New Fair Grounds. Tbe

having sent four companies to represent the
