The expedition left Detroit on the g|th ot

li e have experienced a gieat deal of bolster
ous weather in pstssing through Lakes St.Clair
and Huron, and have been detained several
days by head winds. The lands along the
shore of Lake Union are generally Jow, wot,
and poor, and covered ptincipally by pine,
spinee and hemlock. The niiiiciulogicnl cha
racter ot tin* country lias been less interesting
loan expected. I have, however, made consi
derable collections, and detected some sub
staures which promise to add to the commerce
ol the country. Among these, the discovery i
of large bodies of gypsum in the St. Martin's
islands, in the straits of Michigan, is the most 1
important.
The island of Michihmackinar presents a
very picturesque appearance on approaching
it ft out the Lake. It i* elevated 310 ten above
