Most bee keepers learned a lasting lesson by the forest tires last July' and August, when they could hardly avoid seeing that it reduced the honey croji by about 2.1 per cent. It is per fectly right to punish the person who starts a tire in the forest, but the pun- ishment does not furnish any pasture j for the bees. The only revenge that will pay is to till the forests with white i clover. A small amount of white or alsike clover seed, sown each season, will soon prevent the recurrence of last years' difficulty. Many bees were lost in the smoke. Now if all the wild waste places near home had been covered with whito clover the bees would not have wandered awav, and the crop would have been far bet ter. I have heard hut few complaints of small yield from any who managed the bees for honey and not for increase of colonies. It takes a great expert to get increase of colonies and great crops of honey the same season. The forest fires also emphasized this fact: To get a hive full of honey you must fill it with bees early. Judging from the talk we hear, there will he more attention given to sowing pasture for the bees this season than ever before. White clover does not last all the sea son, but is generally admitted to be the greatest and best honey plant. There is nothing that can be grown with less labor. There is no place where it will do any better, if as well, as right here. But it costs so much! Ah, yes! That is just what we are all saying about the present Executive Administration, but when asked to loan it $100,000,000 you ollered it $(100,000,000. No nation ever was able and so willing to pay so much for its greatness. True, if bee-life were as long as human life, we might sit still, content that white clover does come and spread without being sown. Yes so does folly, but the State keeps an asylum for the fool. White clover makes good pasture for almost all farm animals. If turned under, it is a good fertiliser. Its crop of seed will pay, therefore it is cheap at present prices. There has not yet been found a honey plant which will repay the cultivation for its nectar for honey alone. I think some Australian gum trees would do well here. The Eucalyptus Is a preventative of malaria, a great bloomer, and a beautiful tree that cau be had at any nursery in Southern California. Again, if you wish to ruin the busi ness and all the honey within three miles from you, plant 10 or 12 pepper trees, which also is a semi-tropical gum-tree. There are plants and plants, both south on this coast, as well as along the Missouri river, which no doubt would flourish and enlarge our harvest considerably here, hut all combined are not near as good as an equal number of acres of while clover. The advantage of alsike above white clover is its yield of hay, and that the common bee as well as the Italian can get the nectar from it. Common red clover is of no benefit to the common bee, while the Italian will get right down into it and prosper when other pasture is brown and sear. The bright est thought is that all the bee-keep ers are sowing something. It is easily demonstrated that pasture is the prime or important question with the aprarian, although Prof. Huntley stated to the Farmers' Institute last November, that the style of the hive, was of the very first importance." Langstroth settled the hive question 25 years ago. Any hive without movable frames is a nuisance. First of all the pasture and location. Secondly the Italiau Queen. And thirdly, the movable frame hive. In two years more there will not be any other style in use in this county. Prof. Huntley also stated to the Farmers' Institute that the bees digest the nectar to make honey of it." This statement does by no means prove or disprove the fact that there is no knowledge, or the want of it, which will disqualify a man from filling a professor's chair in an agricultural college. Our pro fessor also recommends Langstroth "On The Honey Bee." A very excel lent book, indeed, but it tells you nothing of the best and latest great inventions—comb-foundation and the honey-extractor. Twenty years be hind the times. Life is too short. Get the American Bee Journal, or, Glean ings in Bee Culture. Either will give very important points and information each month. This seems to necessitate here the statement, that I believe no greater or better service could be rendered to the world than to make a fire of at least eighty per cent, of the light trash, especially so-called fiction, published since the invention of the press. We would still have left a liter ature that would bear culling. Now, as to the age of the queen, I Would like to emphasize the fact, that this is the age of the Italian Queen. One extra good common queen in a thousand may possibly be equal to a very poor Italian for honey; but never for docility aud beauty. The age o* any does not exceed five or six years. Bee men do not use them as a rule longer than three honey seasons. I "TTTHT-N* they put a y y man in jail, he j cannot follow liis natural inclinations. His enjoyment of life is limited. He cannot eat what he wants to—he is lim ited to a very frugal diet. He is alive to be sure, but life i doesn't possess very many advantages. Are not all these things equally true of a dyspeptic For all of the real enjoy ment he gets out of life, he might as well be in jail. He can not eat what he likes, nor as much of it aa he would like. If he transgresses any of the rules of his diet, he is punished for it >He suffers much, gets little sympathy. Dyspepsia starts with indigestion, and may lead to almost j anything. Indiges tion means a variety of things—it bows itself in many ways. At tn-.t, perhaps a little heaviness in the stomach, a little sourness, windy belcbings and heartburn. Headaches begin to come pretty soon after that, and biliousness and a foul taste in the mouth in the morning. Chronic constipation is almost inevitable, and it is probably the most serious trouble that eve r takes hold of a man. Its seeming simplicity is the tiling that makes it most dangerous, because it leads to neglect. Constipation means that the body is hold ing poisonous, impure matter that should be gotten rid of. The poison is being re absorbed into the blood and the whole body is being filled with it. Impurity in the blood may lead to almost any disease. There is no telling what may come of it. Constipation is the start of it all. And yet people are careless about it. It is the most serious thing in the world, and the easiest to cure if you go about it right. I)r. Pierce's Pleasant Pellets cure constipation. Cure it positively, certainly, infallibly. Cure it so it stays cured. Cure it so you can stop taking medicine. And that is something that no other remedy in the world wilt do. your hives are all movable, frame hives you can prevent swarming by raising jour queens and dividing the colonies late in May or as early as possible. And it will pay to send to some dealer at a distance every year for at least one or two queens. If you have not divided or introduced new queens, and if your bees have not swarmed much for two years you may look, for many of them to dwindle and die about the first of June, for no other reason but the age of the queen. One Italian in a thousand will toler ate an assistant; I do not think a common queen was ever known to do so. They do not die of old age but simply because they were made so small. With regard to her wedding she must have liberty, or death. Without meeting the drone your virgin queen can lay 50 or CO eggs which will produce only male bees or drones. She seldom ever does that, unless restrained of her liberty, or if there are no drones in the air when she flies out. Having properly met the drone he dies immediately and she is qualified to lay from GOO to 3,000 eggs per day, each one of which pro duces an undeveloped female, or worker bee, unless fed for the purpose and therebj' made a queen. In laying a drone egg, at will, she prevents it from loucliiug the fertility received by her in contact with the drone; but each worker egg must touch it, so in a few years it is all gone; she then lays a few drone eggs and being in capable of any further usefulness she dies. The old queen leads the swarm ing. Therefore, in buying, take the one she left; for she is a young thing and cannot leave her mamma. Ex amine your hives in May and if any are entirely without eggs or brood, in the worker cells, you may depend it has no queen, and unless you supply it with one, or brood from which to make one, it will goon die.
