pose, but tills being insufficient to defray
the cost thereof. Geo. H. Hammond F™y
who first suggested the work to the' town’
has very generously assumed the extra ex’
pense beyond the appropriation. The Grand
Trunk R. R. contributes one hundred dol
lars also, as the sewer takes the surface
water near their track.
A strong popular movement is on foot in
this village to form a corporation to purchase
the LorlDg Flour Mills and privilege as a
plant fora shoe factory. The buildings
with very little alteration will accommodate
a business, employing 100 hands, with
plenty of room to enlarge if desired. The
water power is used through three wheels,
any one of which would do the work for
such a factory. Nearly i-ne thousand dollars
has already been subscribed amoDg our citi
zens without any canvas, and we have
every reason to expect the necessary amount
will be raised. Here will be an opportunity
for some enterprising shoe firm to occupy a
Sue set of buildings in a desirable location,
with ample water power, and where goods
can be shipped either by rail or water, the
wharves beingjjut a lew rods distant, and
the Grand Trunk and the Maine Central R.

Norway.
On October 28 and 29 the Oxford County
Teachers’ Institute meets at Academy build
ing in this village.
Tuesday morning Charles Tltcomb of
Paris was arraigned before the Norway mu
nicipal court charged with assault upon
Charles N. Cooper. Fined one dollar and
costs. Appealed.
The Unlversalist Sunday school gave a
Harvest Concert Sunday evening. The
church was crowded. Excellent mu9lc was
furnished by George A. Briggs of Pans,
George Horne of this place and the Norway
Orchestra.
A special town meeting has been called to
see if the town will vote the $500 offered by
the selectmen and guaranted by leading
citizens for the detection and conviction of
the parties who broke into the stores of F.

Thursday evening about six o’clock an
alarm was sounded. Fire was discovered in
the store of Grace Nevers. Companies 1 and
2 at once responded and the blaze was soon
under control. The stock was only slightly
damaged. Loss to the building. Fire caused
