A New Warehouse.— Thomas .1. Clunie,
although a resident of San francisco, was
raised in this city and always calls Sacra
mento bis home. He says he likes its
climate, its people, and predicts for it a j
prosperous future. He bas looked all over j
the State with a view ot making business j
investments, and has come to the conclu- j
sion that Sacramento is to-day the most
prosperous city on the coast, and noplace j
in the State can offer such good induce- j
ments for business ventures. Unlike Los
Angeles, business here is not overdone. Iti
is the great trade centre oi northern and i
central California, and he predicts that it
■will improve more in the next five years
than it has in the past fifteen. lie has de
cided to build a brick ware-house on the j
levee at the foot of Q and II streets. In j
size it will be 100x170, have a capacity of;
12,000 toil and cost $20,01 The contract!
for its construction has been let to E. I-'.
Woodward. It will rest on lis brick piers,
be approached on three sides by railroad

This enterprise is another evident of the j
undeniable fact that this city in the near

of tin School Supplement, Buffalo, X. V..
some time since offered as a premium to
subscribers for 1885 a new arithmetic. The
arithmetic was to be compiled from ques
tions and problems pared by teachers of
the United States, Canada and England. I
The publishers advertised in the scliool
journals of the above-named oountries for
questions to be submitted, the same being i
divided into eight groups, each group being
entitled to fifteen prizes, divided into first, i
second and third class, with a total amount
of $000 offered in such awards. The sub
scriber desiring to compete was required to
send a ii.-: of ten problems arid their an
swers upon some one of the groups of top
ics. The publishers anticipated receiving
10,000 questions, but instead have received
about $0,000. from 935 applicants. The
committee of examination lias now made
known the list of successful panics, and in
the list' of thirty-three who were awarded
the first prizes is noticed the name of K. P.

says this is owing, in a great measure, to

are" very much discouraged. The present
low price docs not give them any profit.
One of the largest growers in this county
informed a reporter on Saturday that tin
hop men. in pruning their vines, found the
roots in a very bad condition, many of
them dead. This is the ease with SO many
that all of the hop men cannot get roots
sufficient to fill up their yards. He says,
from present indications, the crop this year
will be light.

to-night at the Crocker Art Gallery. Every

people have made a serious mistake. The

ing fund. Copies of the paintings of Ro

$32 50, for the benefit of the Museum.
Norton Bush arrived yesterday by steamer
with the Gerard and Rosenthal paintings,
and they will be put in place to-day. A
livery manager proposes to the Association
to carry people west of Eighteenth street
to and from the exhibition at 25 cents per
bead, if sufficient signers are bad to justify
the effort. To that end L. P. Martin will
this morning open books of subscription at
places and according to terms elsewhere
set forth in the advertising columns. In
the same columns people who usually get
their bats chalked for shows are noti
fied not to apply for passes, and it is pri
vately communicated that this even in
cludes the "press gang." Chief of Police
Jackson has appointed an officer for night
duty at the door, to spot _ objectionable
characters. Mrs. Arnold, of San Francisco.
has sent notice that she will contribute a
fine collection to-day. and Mrs. Charles
Crocker, of San Francisco, has sent won 1
of her intention to add a third to her con
tributions to-day, in the form of a collec

Baseball.
A very interesting game of baseball, at
trading a large attendance, was played a
Agricultural Park yesterday afternoon be
tween the newly-organized Union Club o
Sacraniento and the Occidentals of San
Francisco. Tbe game was very creditable
to the contestants, not only because it de
veloped some very good playing at times,
but also because of it- being conducted in a
quiet, gentlemanly, good-natured manner.

terday swore to a warrant against Sim
Gould, ii.- son-in-law accusing him of
kidnaping a little girl three years of age,
and Gould was arrested at Woodland.' t.i
which place he had gone with the child, on
a telephonic dispatch from Chief Jackson.
It would appear that Mrs. Gould has left
her husband, for reasons satisfactory to her
self and friends, and has retained the
charge of their little girl. He, however,
managed to get possession of the child and
took, it away. It is very doubtful whether
a barge of* kidnaping can be made to hold.

Kennedy, of Placer county, passed through
on Satunlay, conveying to San Quentin a
man named Prank Fralov, who was re
cently convicted at Auburn of murder, the
jury fixing iii,- penally at imprisonment for

I homos Lahey, arrested in Colusa county
for obtaining money under false pretenses.

In the Superior Court of Yolo county* the
jury in the case of George vs. The Central
'acific Kailroad Company, which had heen
on trial for several days, failed to agree and
were discharged.

leg two or three days ago in consequence
if the falling of a ladder upon which he

street, Xew Bedford, Mass., desires in
formation as to the whereabouts of John
H. Sullivan, a tanner, who worked in a

Deputy Sheriff Fredericks arrested a ma
named George Williams Saturday evening
for burglarizing a residence. lie stole a
beefsteak from the kitchen and a lady
satchel, containing some money and small
articles, from an inner room.

the Government in the capacity of Internal
Revenue Collector of the Fourth District.

The Governor on Saturday granted a nar
don to James Donley, who was convicted oi
murder in the second degree in Butte coun
ty in 1878, and sentenced to twelve and a
half year.-,' imprisonment in the Stat
Prison. The pardon was issued on the
recommendation of tin- State Prison Di
rectors.
Last Friday night a flock of ducks—
ballys "—Hew over the city, and some of
thc-m came in contact with one of the elec
tric-light masts on 0 street, the result being
that three fell to the ground. A citizen
licked up two, but the third struggle!

A colored man named Charles Othello,
aged 35 years, who has kept a bootblack
stand near the Golden Eagle Hotel, was
found dead in his bed Saturday morning,
under I circumstances indicating that lie
died of hemorrhage oftlie lungs, he having
had a lung trouble for some lime. Th
Coroner deemed it unnecessary to hold an
inquest.
The Police Court-room and the offices of
the Police Judge and City Attorney, wliich
were damaged by tin- recent fire- at the
station-house, have been handsomely pa
pered, painted, whitened, am! so nicely
fixed up generally that they are decided.;
a pleasant place to visit. A sixty-day sen
tence in such a handsome Court-room
would be almost a luxury.
In Department Two of die Superior
Court Saturday the jury in the case of John
Reynolds vs. L. M. Lincoln, relative to th
ownership ofa piece of land at Sutterville
rendered a verdict for the defendant It
has been before the California Supreme
Court and the Supreme Court of the United
States more than once, and may be taken
before them again on appeal.
For the benefit of the Government ob
servers who are attending to the eclipse at
Delta, Washington time was yesterday
sent through from Washington; by means
of a continuous telegraph line, the clock in
tlie Xational Observatory being connected
with the wire in such a manner that the
pendulum's moveii nts did the telegraph
ing. The wire worked admirably.
Yesterday a little seven-year-old boy,
who was presented with a -<fo gold piece,
took a stroll on X street with his golden
treasure in his pocket. At a store on X
street, between Eighth and Ninth; he pur
chased an I. X. L. bull-dog pistol, ;.JS-cal
iber, for $4, and went home with the gun
in his pocket. An officer returned the pis
tol to the store and made the proprietress
return the money.
So far J. J. Baras has received no intelli
gence as to the fate of his son, whom it is
supposed was drowned in the Sacramento
river on Thursday last. The finding of his
coat in a small row-boat led to the belief
that he was drowned, A party who was
well acquainted with the lad says that be,
with several other boys, was seen in a boat
near Courtland Friday. His parents say
that he was well treated at In me, and
would not absent himself in that manner,
and they are of the opinion thai he was
drowned.
Saturday morning a Sacramentan arrived
at the northern end -if the Third-street
bridge just as the Woodland and Delta
train was pulling out of the depot, lie
proved equal to the emergency, however,
and pursued it like a racer, the crowd in
the depot cheering him on with all sorts of
encouraging cries. He succeeded in over
hauling the train, and acknowledged the
plan-lit- of the admiring populace by tak
ing off his hal and bowing. About the
time tin- train reached the Sacramento and
Yolo bridge, however, he bad ascertained
that he was going (ho wrong way— his des
tination being Stockton! lie jumped off
ami hurried back to the depot, and tbe
good-natured crowd gave him a lively
welcome.

Doyle, met on X street, a short distance

upon Doyle, took the pistol from him and

ii, cutting the scalp so thai the blood
flowed profusely. Another man, named
Charles Donnelly, is said to have assist!
Perry. Neither of them can he found by
tin- police, they having disappeared before
an officer arrived. Doyle was arrested and
taken to the station-house by officer Ar
lington, bni refused to say anything about
the difficulty. It is understood to have
grown out of a fight which Perry and
Doyle had early yesterday morning, in
which the latter was worsted.

ramento, In the matter of MAX ('AMI', an in-
solvent Debtor. Mux Camp having filed in tliw
Court his petition, schedule and inventory hi
insolvency, by which it appears that he is an in-
solvent debtor, the said Max Camp is hereby de-
clared to be insolvent. The Sheriff of Sacra-
mento county is hereby directed to take posses-
sion of all the estate, real and personal, of the
said Max Camp, debtor, except such ns may be
by law exempt from execution and of all rus
deeds,' vouchers, books of account and papers,
and to keep the same safely until the appoint-
ment or the assignee of his estate. All _ Persons

him or to any person, firm or corporation for his
